Don's points are important - most 28'/30' Breakaways have very small basements. Only the '94+ 28's have decent basement compartments. Most Breakaways (and some Regencies) have propane generators, a serious drawback (which is why I swapped mine for the Honda gaso) - 25 (usable) gals of LPG lasted around 28 hours. The Honda goes 75+ hours on a 25 gal tank. While staying at an TV park allows the genset to be off, on the road, there are times the roof A/C is necessary. In addition, the LPG Kohler is VERY noisy. All this points to a Regency. Consider the name "BREAKAWAY" It implies getting away for a trip, a vacation or a weekend NOT 4-5 months occupancy. Dr. and Mrs. Yale travelled extensively in the 30' BREAKAWAY I have now. I think they were very wise to have it made (and subsequently modified) the way they did. The dinette provides additional sleeping space and a little additional storage space and even a place for the very good (albeit much added weight) safe. The two closets are pretty good size, but not intended for 'full timing'. By the way, the length limit in part of Yosemite was 21'

We have found our 28' Regal/454 fine for short trips within 150 miles of Knoxville. Even with that, we drive our little Cavalier so we have transportation if needed. Like this week we're at Lotterdale Cove Campground in Greenback,TN, and are playing golf at two or three different local courses. Driving the Barth to the golf courses just doesn't make sense. The kind of travel we're anticipating is Massachusetts, Florida, maybe even out west if we get adventuresome, for maybe a month or so at a time. I just don't feel confident that the 27 year old 454 can pull a 4000# towed vehicle very efficiently. Yeah, I've seen them, too. But I guess I got spoiled the year I owned the 35' Dynasty. You can drive that thing for 10 hours and not feel stressed at all. Ten hours behind a 28' 454 and I'm about toast. I guess we just have to make sure that we'll use it. Humbo

"The closets were not intended for full timing". I bet those closets are bigger than ours! We only have one closet in our bus and it measures 29x29 inches and would be square except one corner is angled so it is even smaller than that. The PO full timed for 8 years and we are into our 9th year and get by just fine.....and no, we do not have a lot of cupboards, in fact we have very few.

We lived in our 42.5' Newell for 8 years. It was a great coach for a full timer. Even so we had our garage in Yuma for some of the good stuff. We started traveling in our 30' Breakaway the summer of 2007. We were in it for 5 months without a tow vehicle and really never felt crowded. Keep in mind that I have one chair and 1/2 the bed. We were traveling almost everyday. We sent one month on the southeast coast of Alaska hopping from ferry to town. Then a couple of months on the mainland of Alaska. Summer of 2010 was 3.5 months in Canada with most in PEI and Newfoundland. Then to KY and MN for about 2.5 more months. 2011 was back east with family and friends for a total of 5 months. Our lifestyle in the 30' Barth is active. Not much time to sit around. So we lived in the Newell and travel in the Barth. Pick you life choices. And in parting, the bigger the bays and closets, the more junk you carry. '92 Barth Breakaway - 30' 5.9 Cummins (6B) 300+ HP 2000 Allison Front entrance

Ok Jim or anyone with experience. I assume it is the air suspension that makes the dynasty easy to drive. How would a Breakaway compare it's shorter and with the mechanical suspension. Would it compare to a 32 regency? Wayne K

The 28' Breakways (like mine) have an absurdly short wheelbase (~145" - 3" longer than my LWB Ford van). Mine tracks like it's on rails, but a couple of owners of 30' have mentioned "wandering". Breakaways are all leaf spring, but some have air-assist. I don't know if that was a factory option or not. Our Breakaway has factory air suspension (Spartan IC-2242 chassis), it is however a longer Breakaway ---at 36 feet. In terms of storage, we live a 2- 3 months at a time without any significant problem. 1993 Breakaway 36ft & 1977 20 ft Spartan: air ride and brakes & P32(?) Yep, you've got a big Breakaway. Bigger engine - bigger lower storage compartments - Bigger chassis GVW. It's almost like a Regency in many respects.

There have been a few coaches called "Breakaways" that really fit no mold, being over 33' and sporting the Cummins 8.3L. And then there's the one labelled "Aristocrat" that resembles the Breakaways-on-Steroids. It seems Barth started having naming convention issues around the '92-'93 model years. (Actually, before, as Bill N Y's "Regis" illustrates.) Or maybe the name was a buyer option Rusty "StaRV II" '94 28' Breakaway: MilSpec AMG 6.5L TD 230HP Nelson and Chester, not-spoiled Golden Retrievers Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not.
