Thank you to all the Veterans that served our country. And thanks to Bill who serves us (and well I might add). The many things you do for us is most appreciated. I was on active duty for six months in 1960 and then stayed in the active reserves for another nine years. Somehow, I never was called to go overseas. Many of the men and women who did go overseas during our conflicts and suffered in so many ways, are my heroes. We all owe them not just our freedom but our very lives.

I joined the Army Reserves and it was an opportunity to learn a lot. I went in as an E1 but when an E5 Radar O'rielly observed a vacant LT slot so I gained permission to go for it and got the direct commission and retired a Major. I was in railroad transportation plans and ops and some of the work I did was used in Desert Storm. I met a lot of fine people in the military. But, the real heros are those who were put in harms way. My dad was a Marine that fought in Okinawa. He went in with a regiment and left with 6 headed to occupied China as the rest were killed or seriously wounded. He was the hero. Tom Taylor

Went to our Village Veterans Day program today as a rep from our depatarment. The Naval Petty officer who played Taps ask me to join the local VFW Post ,said they were getting short of members. Ten of the Honor Guard were WWII Vets, with a few Gulf Wars Vets. Seem I was the only crazy Asian War guy in the group. JKB 88 28' Regal 454 Blue/Silver metalflake

It's an honor to serve (although, at the time, many times, "honor" wasn't the word that came to mind .) I joined 5 JUL 1960 (sworn in as a Midshipman 4/c; Ike was Prez and Arleigh Burke was CNO) and retired 31 JUL 1994. It was a wild ride! First joined the Army in 1970 and eventually retired in 2011. Enjoyed most of it and would do it all again. It was a great honor and thanks to all who have served. 1990 32' Regency, Wide Body Spartan Chassis, 8.3 CTA Cummins 4 Speed Allison Trans South Central Missouri

I attended the Veterans Day celebration in my small town of Madisonville, TN today. The second grade class assembled on the steps of the courthouse and sang several nice songs. A lady sang the National Anthem. Over twenty veterans from various wars were asked to come forward for recognition. Several widows and mothers of men who died in service were recognized. We all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. A veteran of the Iraq/Afghanistan war spoke for five minutes about honor and duty and loss. There was a 21 gun salute and a soldier played taps. And then I walked my three grandchildren back to their second grade classroom. I felt like I had been transported back in time 70 years. It was a bitter sweet feeling. Jim

One thing I did (and insisted my subordinate COs do) was to commit to memory the enlisted Oath of Enlistment: "I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." I didn't want to be reading from a script when an individual was making such a commitment...
