Then I'll commit to an issue causing low compression, and therefore no ignition, either a destroyed fire ring or hole in the piston crown.

Then, the breather vent tube would look like a steam engine puffing.

It makes me wonder what the blowby looks like out of that tube? hmm

Good thing we got some diesel boys around here! Cracked supply line sounds most probable, but you'd think they would have found it right away.

Maybe injector pump leaking... harder to find?

Seems like for washdown the cylinder would also have low compression/poor combustion and be noticeable when cranking. Besides, an inch of fuel in the pan in only 200 miles is a lotta washdown! Hmm...

I would like to relate to everyone the nicest thing that happened on the trip. I had an appointment at the VA today and being around all the veterans reminded me of this happening'

When we were visiting the giant redwoods and walking along the trails, I was wearing a Vietnam Veteran ball cap. A group of ladies, most appeared to be in their late twenties to early thirties, passed by and several said "Thanks for your service." A little while later we passed a young mother with two young daughters. I would guess their age at 8 to 10. The mother said "Thanks for your service", then turned to her daughters and told them "Thank that man for his service and our free country" They did.

Call me a sentimental old fool. It made me feel good and gives me hope for our future generations.

I get that in places like Lowes or Home Depot as I get a 10 percent discount with the ID card as a retiree. They have not forgot the "one percenters" which is the percentage of our population who has been or is in the military.
It sure was not that way in the late Sixties or Seventies. We had to take off our uniforms to go off-post. There were places when I travelled in uniform as a CPT that I was not served.
I can sure relate to what the African Americans must have felt.

The treatment of the vets from SE Asia remains in my mind a national disgrace. Many of my friends, enlisted and draftees alike were treated badly when they came home.

The paltry treatment of our wounded/disabled vets today is almost as bad. They and their families deserve way more support for their service. I salute them all.

I was in from 7/60 to 7/94; Things changed over time, from "disrespect" in the '60s, through ambivalence and neglect during Carter's administration, through discovery and value in the '90s. While I appreciate the newly-minted respect for it, I really do wonder if people really understand what it takes to serve in the military.

And if they understand the military does what it's told to do by the elected officials...

It's a disgrace. The men and women who have served were doing what their government asked them to. So instead of throwing the bums out of government that keep getting us in various messes, they blame the soldiers. How dumb is that? I was in ROTC for 4 years at the University of Michigan from 1956 to 1960. We were barely tolerated by the student body.
I guess the elitists don't mind others fighting their battles.

Took me awhile to figure out how to do this but here is the route we traveled on our trip. For us the trip started and ended in Harlem, GA. Tom and Nancy would be slightly different since they started in Kentucky.
