Our "shake down" cruise to Big South Fork Natl Recreation Area, camping and testing all the systems. Beautiful with all the dogwoods blooming and now the rhododendrons in full bloom too. Lots of horseback riders enjoying the great weather too, this campground has horse stables within walking distance, you can board your own or rent. Nice hiking trails, fabulous bluff views, wild turkey (two legged variety) and occasional bear. Campground has swimming pool after Memorial Day open, all paved roads, each site private with table and fire ring and water/electric. $22/night, cheaper for over 62 and handicapped (any size coach). Between Oneida TN (US 27) and Jamestown TN (US127), just south of KY Border.
Also close Pickett State Park, for smaller coaches only, great spring fed lake with trout, natural arch and rental cabins. Rugged terrain.

if you like trees you might look at the park on I-80 exit 312 in NE on the way to the GTG. I think it is called Mormon Island State Rec area near Grand Island NE, trees, camping and lake with swimming and fishing pier. Never stayed there but it looks so nice from the interstate. But we can only look and dream.

Thats too funny. We have stayed there several times. I'm from northern Missouri and I80 is the route I like best. Mormon park has plenty of walking trails. It has a small beach but does not allow dogs on it. The shower house is nice. Most sites are small.

From Iowa on to the GTG we are looking for places to stay and things to do.

If you find that your travels make a stop before (3+ Hours) Elk Hart needed . Try Starved Rock State Park just off I-80 Great water falls, hiking, Illinois River, nice lodge for lunch or supper. Sorry no Bald eagles this time of year. Busy on the weekends. Campground has some electric, ok showers.

Oddly enough, I've also stayed at Mormon Island near Grand island, NE - on my way to or from the Nebraska Star Party south of Valentine. A very nice little park.

for a free night dry camping you could stay on I-280 exit 11A in Rock Island IL at Jumers Casino. They got a mixed RV/truck section in the back along an artifical lake, pretty good Casino food i.e. crablegs on Fri or Sat.
In Iowa I_80 exit 220 (Williamsburg) is a outlet mall and a small Casey truckstop next to it. Also free overnight, nothing special, but you could visit Amana Colonies not far from there.
