http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3282603.pdf Now we know why our Barth travel trailer says "Air Flo Design." Our trailer was presumably built the same month Mr. Barth applied for the patent. You're right Sherrie - He did apply for the Patent the same month as your trailer was built It would be interesting to know what the trailers said the month before...

Patent applied would be the most likely guess. It also was the position of choice since the competition couldn't define the limits of protection. At that time it was about 3 years from filing to award if there were no challenges from the patent office that you would care to refute. Were the patent argued with the Office for several years technology might change (tig or mig might enter or better alloys or fastening techniques) and the patent would be amended and thus the patent applied status would continue and upon final grant the 17 year protection would begin at a much later date. I'm not sure about the rv industry but for the auto industry the patent status generally was under an agreement that gave each corporation a one year exclusivity before opening it to the other competitors

It is interesting to read about the Selden patent for automobiles. For a period of years, every auto maker had to pay royalties to a guy who never built a wheelbarrow, let alone a car. But, he had it on paper and patented it. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered
