Since I live in Canada I would like to buy the brake rebuilding parts I need from a supplier near to me. I am being told that the parts I need (rear brake drums, shoes, seals and spring kits) can't be cross referenced with the Gillig parts numbers in my manual. Phoned Gillig and they can't cross reference either but could order and ship me the parts at a pretty stiff cost. I'm dealing with a Dana truck rear axle so can't understand why the problem obtaining parts other than Gillig protecting their interest. Any ideas would be appreciated. I also don't want to take everything apart before I've got the replacement parts on hand. Thanks Bob and Jan Orr Canadian Barth owners 94 30ft. Breakaway/3116 Cat/ Allison 5 speed/ Gillig

Bob are you sure you have a gillig chassis? I have never seen a Barth Breakaway with a Gillig chassis. Most breakaway's have a spartan chassis, or you may have a Regency. If you can, let us know what the vin # is and what brand of engine. At one time all of my brake drums were replaced but there were no part numbers on the list. As you know after spending many years on this forum...Barth did many variations. We definitely have a 1994 Breakaway with Cat 3116, Allison 5 speed and all on a Gillig air ride chassis. Now that its confirmed what I'm looking for I hope someone will be able to help. Bob and Jan Orr Canadian Barth owners 94 30ft. Breakaway/3116 Cat/ Allison 5 speed/ Gillig

As you are well aware, having spent many years on this forum yourself, I am a truck mechanic. To find out which brake shoes and drums you have is usually a pretty straightforward process. You strip down a wheel position, go for parts, return and install. I believe what Sky was trying to convey was a little surprise. Gillig air-ride was typical of a Regency Setup. Maybe the difference between your coach's suspension, and his might be tire, rim, brake and hub size. When I spec out a service truck for myself, I get the 19.5s and have a low pro hub and brake drums on my trucks. Ryder, Penske & U-Haul do this too so their walk-in boxes are closer to the ground for the consumers to load their household goods. Much different brakes and drums than a 22.5 Seeing that we do not have you data tag or vin number or a picture of your coach we can only speculate as to what nature of the beast you might have for a setup. I don't think anything has been truly confirmed yet. Tire size for your coach could be different than Sky's coach of 22.5 and his brakedrums & shoes, or for that matter, anyone elses, might not fit your coach. His GVW is 29,640, what is yours? His tires size is 22.5, what is yours? His front axle weight is capable of 10,400lbs and his rear is rated for 19,240lbs, what is yours? Chances are very good, if all of the above are the same, someone here would have the same thing as you. If you don't want to share your tag info, than maybe you can confirm the specs??? Here is another Gillig chassis on a Barth... this one has a GVW of 33,540lbs. Yes they did...

Here you go...I'll more than likely try to solve my brake parts problem by doing what was suggested: take one side apart and match up shoes/seals/springkits/drums with supplier. really the best way to make sure everything fits. Thanks Bob for the pictures of the vin and of the coach. You have an different coach from what I have seen. Do you have a cat engine or a cummins? That is a very nice looking coach. Most of the shorter gillig chassis have the dana rear axle. Should not be a problem finding the correct parts for it. Best of luck to you and hope things work out ok to get the parts. Nice looking coach Bob and Jan and thanks for sharing that data tag info. Here is another photo from the upload site. I manipulated that image and gave you an avatar.
