This is what is wrong with the fuel tank
here is a picture of the fuel tank and notice that the filler enters the tank about in the middle. Yes there is a vent that will allow the tank to be filled completely but it takes a LONG TIME! Diesel fuel foams like crazy and as soon as the tank is filled so that fuel stands in the filler hose, it starts to back up requiring a VERY slow addition of fuel to fill completely.



I have looked at the front of the tank and there is no reason not to re-locate the filler there at the top of the tank. After this summer race season is over I am going to remove the tank and have the filler changed. I am tired of the 40 minute fuel stops!

I am surprised to see they did that. Good manufacturing practice and federal law mandate that all hoses be above the highest fuel level to avoid leakage at connections or if the hose deteriorates. I know of several motor homes that leak if topped off due to elderly hoses.

It is a very strictly-enforced rule at tech inspection in boat racing. With the advent of alcohol being added to gasoline, it is even more important. Probably not as big a deal with a diesel, but a leak is a leak and a seep is a seep.

Looks like you can only get a little more then 2/3 of a tank of fuel in there. What were they thinking?

I always run the right tank as the spare, but after a few trips I learned that if I fill it up I have to run 30 or so miles out of it so as not to smell any overflow. I have checked all hoses and connectors and figured the overflow was from expansion. This is a 81 p30 gasser with 2 35 gallon tanks. Not what you guys are talking about but may be of interest to gasser owners.

Typically, the nozzle shuts off at about 30-40 gallons, depending on how low I take it, then I can put at least another 15-20 gallons in by manually operating the nozzle at a very low rate until I have standing fuel at the filler cap.

This has been a common complaint of some Barth owners here before thinking that their tank was only a 40 gallon capacity tank. Mine measures dimensionally out to 70 gallons and I believe it as I have put in over 60 gallons one time.
