Since we have owned our Barth I have replaced all of the old polybutylene piping with 1/2 inch PEX piping. It has been a year and a half since I did that and I have recently noticed the pump would cycle one frequently even with no water being used. I put a pressure gage on the outside spigot and turned the pump on. It would build up pressure and shut off but it would slowly lose pressure causing the pump to start again. It would take about 30 seconds or so for this to happen. The pressure was in the mid to upper forties. We have looked extensively for leaks and can not locate any. My questions is, what could be the reason? I have a few theories but first need to know something about the Shurflo pump. Does it have it's own check valve? If so could it be leaking and causing the pressure to slowly blead off? Another leak could be the check valve that also doubles as the valve for the autofill. Check the fittings at each faucet. More likely, the issue is a failure of the internal check valve in the water pump. Shur-Flo offers a rebuild kit at reasonable prices, and the installation is quite easy. Removal of the FW pump to make the repair rarely is.
