I've never heard of one... I think you are talking about this post.

I'm guessing it's really a 3116. But it's just a guess.

I wonder if this is the same engine...

It has the "Item Number" of 1106, but it's actually a 3208. However, the 7th item on this list states the equipment has a Cat 1106...

Cat does make an 1106 cu.in./18L engine...but even a used one isn't going for $4K.

If i remember right the sellers post that i got the info from said that the 1106 was the predecessor to the 3208. And it probably isn't worth $4000, altho you have to realize it also includes the 6 speed Allison tranny and control cables. I also noticed that there was another 1106 on that site of Rusty's for $6000. If any one is interested i can get contact info for you and you can talk to the guy and see if he still has it.

Yeah, I saw that - but I figured, since the first posted was in 3/08, that the Arcadia guy bought it possibly mating it with the Allison for A Project, then quit...

I was a Shell Oil Industrial-Commercial rep in the late '60s and early '70s; the 3208NA and 3208T came out in that timespan. I don't recall anyone using a Cat 1106, but back then the Cummins 225/250 and DD 6-/8- 71s were common, and Cats in fleets were not; I only sold to one Cat fleet, only about 100 tractors, and all were 3208NAs.

Was this used in an over the road application or was it an industrial/dozer type of application?

Used in a lot of stationary (generators) and commercial marine. I would guess, also in medium-duty off-road equipment.

I recall an ebullient-cooled version of this engine's predecessor fuelled by natural gas, powering generators to supply a shopping center. The center had a lot of them, computer-controlled to only keep as many running as necessary for the load (which is why they didn't have fewer, larger engines - I would have expected Worthingtons or EMDs of much larger size).

Ebullient cooling was a weird feature; the engines cooling system was closed but at near ambient pressure. The engines basically boiled the coolant (pure water with a few additives), and in winter, piped to the center's shops for heat; in summer, large radiators condensed the steam.

18L would be large in the USA for a truck engine. But I have seen some weird configurations in heavy hauling/oversized rigs.

Biggest one in an over the road truck? I once saw a V-16 ~ 71 Series Detroit Diesel. This was a V configuration with 8 cylinders per side.

It was in an Autocar from around 1973'ish

The 1106 was the predissor to the 3208. Rumor has it was based on the 500 plus cubic inch Ford V8. It didn't stay around long and was replace by the 3208.

BTW if you do not know. All Cat higway engines started with 3 as the first digit and the last digit was the number of cylinders. The 2 center numbers were the liters per cylinder. So the 3126 had 6 cylinders of 1.2 liters each or 7.2 liters total.

That has now changed to the C plus size. Such as the C7 or C12.

Next Cat rumor has it they are dropping out of the highway business as they are unable to meet 2010 emissions. We will see.

Gary, that doesn't work for the 3208. 3 and 8 work okay. but 2.0 times 8 equals 16 liters and the 3208 is a 10 liter engine.
