Hot dog that thing sure is pretty! I'd love to see how it mounted in the MH. I took delievery this week of a TDI engine for a 99 VW Passat I ordered from the Czech Republic. I'll probably have this toad ready before the Barth since I can fit the toad in my garage. Doug Bywaters Near Skyline Drive Virginia! | |||

We made some final decisions on the engine and local mods yesterday, and it'll go into the coach tomorrow or Monday. Probably be road-ready by Wednesday as we've distilled residual issues down to adjustments on the throttle-position sensor. Nothing is ever easy...but the engine's in and running - the only thing to do is get the oil cooler hooked up... I'll run it a hundred miles or so locally, change the oil, then a trip to MO next Tuesday or Wednesday. The first leg is ideal - rolling hills - no heavy pulls until I get west of Chattanooga. By then, it'll have 500+ miles on it. All I need to do is hook up the pyrometer and the fan for the new oil cooler (and clean the interior - I never did after the last trip...) StaRV II is home! New engine runs fine. Maggie and Casey went bonkers to see their rolling home had rolled home. 1200 miles on the new Main Propulsion, and no major issues...at about 250 miles, the low coolant light came on; I figured the problem was the wire (on which the connector had been loose)...splice a new piece and connector in where the fan clipped the old wire, and on the road in 15 minutes. Have to watch EGT, as the new IP, injectors and turbo can provide much more edibles to the cylinders. Stopped in Manchester, TN, mainly to get an oil change at 400 miles, but no shop there could/would handle. Having expected this, I had brought a drain pan, oil and filters, and changed it myself. Engine has run great, and the fuel economy is up about 15% with the engine not fully broken in yet. EGT: Exhaust Gas Temperature IP: Injection Pump. Could be an inline or rotary fuel injection pump. In Rusty’s case it's rotary. Injectors: Different injectors provide more fuel and or a different spray pattern. Turbo: Exhaust driven, intake manifold air psi boosting device. Edibles: Fuel, Diesel... cash removing, a negative effect. Like a teenager eating you out of house and home. The only difference is you can slow down a motor home.

Got back home yesterday; the new engine has a bit less than 2,500 miles on it. The only maintenance was to change oil at 400 miles and again at 1,100...another change will come shortly at 2,450. The old engine averaged about 9.3 mpg on this very same route (done twice); the new one is at 10.2 average - as it loosens up, mpg increases. The next-to-last leg was 10.5, and the last leg looks like it'll cross 11 mpg. The only repairs from the trip are to replace the ISS Pro pyrometer with a Stewart-Warner - The ISS Pro doesn't seem to be accurate (reads 150°F at rest), and it was designed for measuring EGT at the turbo outlet, and mine's installed on the inlet. The fresh water system decided to entertain on three separate occasions. The drain line was non-metallic conduit, and it split from the freeze. The city water inlet pressure reducer started leaking, and the hot water heater relief valve started leaking. One final note - except for one station, all the disel fuel available was ultra-low (15 ppm) sulfur (whereas low-sulfur is 500 ppm). The lower sulfur content means that an injector pump lubricant is absolutely necessary for any mechanical injector pump.
