Can someone please decode this vin # for me? 17n640126kw020792 It's a 1990 chassis I know it's a John Deere chassis with Ford engine but would like to know if it's a fuel injected engine and if the brakes are hydraulic or air or air over hydraulic

It's an '89 chassis, and being a gasser, would have hydraulic brakes. It probably has EFI (TBI) aas the '88s had it on light trucks. As always, it's best to confirm with that specific unit. Checking the Vin# I'm coming up with an 89 Chassis with Hydraulic brakes. I can not tell if it's MPFI or Carburetor. My gut tells me Carb. but Rusty is probably right. What I can tell you is that we list a coach that has the frame built just before you ending in 020791. Barth finished that coach in May of 89. The vin you supplied was finished by Barth in late June of 90. Both tags show the frames were finished in March of 89 at the John Deere Waterloo Works Manufacturing Plant in Iowa.

How do you know if it's TBI or not? I know what a carburetor is but have read that TBI sort of looks like a carburetor. I'm familiar with Bosch K Jetronic and D Jetronic systems with fuel distributors etc, but not sure I've ever seen a TBI system.

My former 1988 Ford F350 service truck with the 460 had what my 91 Barth Commercial Unit has. It's called MPFI or Multi Port Fuel Injection. In a lot of instances the car/pickup truck technology catches up to the much heavier truck chassis at a slightly slower pace. Usually a year out back then. We have no idea what's in that unit so I would suggest you contact Freightliner, who bought the John Deere chassis division, and ask them what it shows. The phone number for parts has always been very helpful to me. Also, update this thread after you find out so I can update the data tag project. This image is also attached at the bottom of the data tag project.
