Hello to all. I'm new to the world of Barth, and I need some help finding some parts (or part numbers at least) I just "inhereted" a 1991 30ft Barth coach with the 5.9 Cummins and AT Allison, mounted on an Oshkosh chassis. The fan /alternator belt is fried on this thing, and I need to replace it in order to drive her home. It wouldn't be an issue for me to go and take the old one off and find a new one, but its sitting 1.5 hrs away, with a limited parts supply around (small town). If I had a number, I could pick one up in the city before I head out. I dont think it has A/C on it, but I can make a phone call tomorrow. I do know it's a serpentine type of belt. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The serpentine belt does not power the A/C compressor. If you had the engine number, on the cam cover side, you could call Cummins and they would give you the belt number. The number that I had on my Cummins when it had the 105 amp alternator is: 5080560 That is a Cummins number and auto parts stores and particularly those that service trucks should be able to cross it. I can say for sure that this belt would be the same because there may have been some fan differences between the earlier engines fitted with the 4 speed and the later fitted to the 6 speed but should be a good starting point. Are you sure it's mounted on an Oshkosh? I think it might be on a Spartan Chassis.

you might find some useful information on the "Cummins, 6bt squeak I can't find (easily)" thread a few post down on the Tech Talk forum. There are even some color photo's! If you have a Freightliner chassis, you should be able to go to a freighliner dealer, armed with the freightliner vin # and obtain a factory cummins belt. I just did this and the new belt cost me $65.00 american, but it is the cummins belt. I am sure there is cross reference to Gates or other aftermarket belt. One thing to make sure of is the condition of the belt tensioner. Make sure it travels back and forth with a fair amount of tension. A bad tensioner may allow the belt to snap and break when the engine is turned off....I have seen this happen first hand, and I would not have believed it if I had not seen it since it is a pretty good size belt. It is an Oshkosh Chassis. Below is a vin decoder for the first three digits of a chassis - His Vin Number is 4CDJ59M27M2104032

Oshkosh was taken over by Freightliner sometime in the early 90's. My coach (sob ) is a Oshkosh XC18RD chassis, 18,000 lbs, rear Diesel, 190hp (upgraded to 230hp) with Allison 542 4 speed auto, 3.31:1 rear end that allows it to cuise at 70mph, (if you want to buy the fuel....) I can take my vin to freightliner and recieve great service on parts, at very resonable prices too. Doug Bywaters Near Skyline Drive Virginia!

Thanks for the great info. I will check with Freightliner in the morning.

Might also check the vibration damper for a wobble. If the coach has sat for a long time (without running) the belt tension can cause the rubber isolator in the damper to shift and the damper will visibly wobble. If left to long with the wobble, it can cause crankshaft damage. That was one of the first things I had to replace on my Cummins with only 75K miles. NAPA also has the belt as it is also used on the Dodge PU '92 Barth Breakaway - 30' 5.9 Cummins (6B) 300+ HP 2000 Allison Front entrance

Thanks for the great resource guys. I called Freightliner this am and found they can get a parts listing on this unit. Found my belt number, and I will put it on this weekend. One question though: this unit has A/C on it that takes its drive from the fan hub via a V belt. Do I need to remove this belt to install the serpentine fan belt? Thanks.

Yes, you will have to remove the A/C belt. That belt part number (Cummins) is 17455. Just loosen the compressor to get enough belt slack to remove from the compressor and then fish the serpentine belt around the fan and replace. If you replace the belt, make sure you get the equivalent heavy duty belt, not just a replacement for the length Ed 94 30' Breakaway #3864 30-BS-6B side entry New Cummins 5.9L, 375+ HP Allison 6 speed Spartan chassis K9DVC Tankless water heater

Thanks MWrench, i will take my multi purpose, fix all olfa knife with me so I can "remove" the A/C comp belt before installing the new fan belt. It can wait till I get her home to put that belt on. Not really hot enough for A/C, or cold enough to need defrost, so no worries on taking drastic measures to make life easier. TTFN

I notice that the unit has the cummins up front (according a prior post. I am interested if it has a thermostatic fan clutch rather than the fixed fan used on rear diesels. Rear diesels push the air through the radiator, so a thermostat fan clutch can not be used but the front end diesel should be different. Pictures...we like pictures!
