Torque wrench
I have to torque a couple of nuts but there is no room for the socket that fits on my torque wrench. Does anyone know of a torque wrench that has like an open end crescent wrench on it? I can get at the bolts with either an open end or closed end crescent wrench but would like to get a little more precise than just guessing what 45 ft lbs would be.
Thanks Jim

45 ft lbs is 540 inch lbs, 45 X 12 being 540.

Put your wrench on a same size bolt head and hook a fish scale on the other end. Measure the length from the hook of the scale to the center of the bolt head. That is the effective length, in inches. Let's day the effective length is 14+ inches. Divide 540 by 14+, and you get 38. That is how hard you have to pull on the wrench to get the correct torque.

There are, of course, open end, box end and crowfoot adapters that go on the end of a torque wrench, but they involve money, as well as math.

Closed end Crescent wrench?

Or, more simply said...

45 ft. lbs. of torque = 45 pounds of force on the end of a 1 ft. long wrench.

45 ft. lbs. of torque = 22.5 pounds of force on the end of a 2 ft. long wrench.

45 ft. lbs. of torque = 15 pounds of force on the end of a 3 ft. long wrench.

45 ft. lbs. of torque = 1 pound of force on the end of a 45 ft. long wrench.

If a wrench is "x" long, and you know the torque reading is 45 ft. lbs., you would arrange the above formula to figure out how much force to place on the wrench using a fish scale and a cheater bar of the appropriate length from center of bolt.
