I was trying to show a different chassis and another company that the owner of Barth bought.

It does seem to suggest that you were not barking up the wrong tree.

Mike Umbaugh who I believe owned Barth Corp in total, actually setup Regency Products after MCC Corp. went bankrupt. That is why the aluminum Barth coaches account for the most of any manufacturer.

The only work BARTH did on the fiberglass MCC was interior build. These MCC Coaches were built in California and finished in Indiana. The Regency Chassis was built in California and shipped to wherever the Coaches were built.
Clear as settled out mud. Just a little murky on the bottom. Mike Umbaugh, owner of Barth, at one point owned their own chassis division and people were buying the MCC/Regency Chassis (Barth Chassis) for other name branded coaches.

With Country Coach being the second largest purchaser of these chassis behind Barth.

JReilly, I think this project pretty much started to see if we could determine how many Barths were built in total and how many of each model. A lot of the information on the tag is self explanatory as far as weight and wheel sizes. The number of primary interest is the Barth Data or Build number. In your case that is 8506-3235-28FP3. Note the Date of MFG 6/85 is the same as 8506. Being built in June your coach could easily be titled as a 1985 or 1986. The next number is where our real interest has been. All the information gathered so far indicates that your coach is the 3235th unit built by Barth. That includes all Travel Trailers, Class C, Motorhomes, and Specialty units such as Bookmobiles, Command units, and others. The 28FP3 tells us it is a 28 foot coach. We think the FP3 has to do with floor plan but are not sure. Before the project started it was thought that Barth built between 7000 and 9000 coaches, it now appears that they built about 4000 units in total and probably about 3000 coaches.

The Regency and Monarch coaches are not included in the original numbering. It appears that Barth built less than 200 Regencies and less than 50 Monarchs. The tag numbers on these coaches will also tell you what chassis was used but that is not the case on the others.

Hope this helps.
Nick

At this point the discussion turned into tires size, rims, possible suspension mods. and air psi inflation and was then moved into it's own thread.

As I worked through the documents on my coach I found the name of a person who appears to be the Project Manager for my coach. The name is Sue Lechlitner and it is dated 6-21-91. There are a number of handwritten notes as well signed by a "Theresa L." Perhaps someone in the Indiana area can find this woman and perhaps she can explain the codes better than we can.
I was not able to find her on the web thus far.

Year end update on the project. So far we have collected 51 tags in total. Eleven Regency, one Monarch, and thirty-nine of all the others. The oldest tag is a 1971 24' on an International Harvester chassis and the newest is the 1997 Monarch on a Spartan Chassis.

The 1971 on the IH chassis is tag number 0899, dated 01/29/1971, the newest tag for a non Regency or Monarch is tag 3934 on a 1995 Breakaway, dated 09/01/1994. That is a total of 3036 units built in 23 years and 8 months.

It is interesting to note that Barth used Chevrolet chassis with a few exceptions until about 1989. After that the Regals I have tags for are on Oshkosh/John Deere chassis with Ford power.

All but 2 of the tags after 1990 are diesel pushers with a fairly even split between Breakaways and Regencies.

The oldest Regency tag is 0019 dated 6/16/1981 on a MCC chassis with Detroit power. We have two other Regency tags on MCC chassis that must have been built after Barth took over, they are tag 0040 and 0042. These also have Detroit power. The model digits on 0019 is MCC35A and on the other two it is 35RDB. The other eight Regencies are 7 Gillig and 1 Spartan. All the Gillig but one are Cat powered. The Spartan and 1 Gillig are Cummins powered.

Hopefully, we can continue to collect tags this year and fill in some of the blanks. I would love to find tags on some of the travel trailers and class C units.

If anyone would like a copy of the data base as it currently stands, Let me know.
Nick

I now have tags on two older coaches and am looking for input on the decoding. The format is a little different than the yymo-9999-99aa we have been looking at on later coaches. The numbers are 711899MC and 708869MH. There are no dashes or spaces in the numbers. I have actually seen and have pictures of the tag on 711899MC. It is a 1971 24 foot on a IH chassis. It has completed January, 1971 on the tag. I am interpreting this as built January , 1971, sequence number 899. This coach is titled as a 1971. The other coach was seen to me by email from the son of the owner who purchased it new. The number 708869MH and a completion date of September, 1970. I suppose August is close enough to September to wonder if the coach was started in August and completed in September. That would make the number built August, 1970, sequence 869. Also note the earlier tag is MH, maybe MotorHome and the other "MC" fits all the later coaches. Also this coach is titled as a 1968 which I assume has got to be a vin tied to the manufacture of the chassis. According to the son the coach has always been in the family and has 12,000 miles on it.

Any input on these interpretations?
Nick
