Currently broken down in the Upper Peninsula of MI with broken pinion. Looking for leads on a Rockwell/Meritor pinion or differential. Tried Motor Coach Restoration but no answer since yesterday.Not my coach - brothers' so we are his internet connection. Any leads appreciated. Thanks Doug: Same problem, NLA. BUT: I learned this 1984 MCC REgency coach was built or modified using the differential from a Government designed large four wheel vehicle. My source thinks it was a Deuce and a Half Army truck. The old, old books from Rockwell say it was a "Project Differential" and not one of the 120, 140 etc series assemblies. The Differential numbers and position of the pinion in the top of the case make it the front differential of a four wheel vehicle. The Pinion has the number 37711 on it. That crosses to a Rockwell pinion for a 23,000 pound class chassis. The differential numbers, of which we found two, cross to a 15,000 pound class axle set and a 17,000 pound axle set. The numbers can't be from the same case, so maybe this was worked on in the past. Replacements are not available so my source has spec'd a new ring and pinion with the same dimensions that are available in the 4.33 ratio we have, or a 4.11 ratio that will give better mileage and lower rpms with a 25,000 pound class rating. We don't know if this is what Barth did or some previous owner but we do know this - the lighter class differential set is too light for a 20,000 pound coach and the pinion cannot be welded no matter what you do. It is too light as a set to take the torque of the DD and any hard strain on the rear wheels (trying to unstuck the coach, driving off road on open fields, race tracks etc), will eventually cause it to break. We have an estimate of $2,000 for a complete rebuild including bearings, shims and seals. No, because we need to get this up to a 23,000 pound class rear end. If this was a PO activity we need to undo it. If it was a Barth "design" we don't want 80's technology when we can get new, better design and better materials. Their replacement (not sure what it really is -ring & pinion or differential) runs about 4k, according to my brother who says he spoke to them.
