RV Alliance America has agreed value on their insurance. I was told an appraisal has to be done first. I have saved all my receipts and if I ever get it totally shipshape, I will be talking to them. http://www.aonrecreation.com/insurance/rv.jsp#agreed

I'm a Recovering Insurance Guy. Progressive offers excellent coverage. Check also Foremost (they've been hyping their RV coverage for several years, and it's fine, IMHO). Good Sam's promotes GMAC's coverage, and while I've not checked it out, having represented GMAC for years and years, they're really trying to compete with Progressive (no easy task). As for me, my RV coverage is with Auto-Owners Group, as is my Homeowners. I represented them for years, and if one has one's Homeowners with them there's 100% off-premises coverage for Coverage C (Personal Property, a/k/a, "Contents"). While Auto-Owners doesn't supply the dazzlingly fast claims of Progressive, the company's attitude makes up for the delays (usually a few days). IMHO, one can't go wrong with Foremost, Progressive, GMAC, or Auto-Owners. I can't give that endorsement to many other companies that advertise heavily.

I'm not an expert at all, but have been with USAA since 1961. I have all my insurance with them, home owners, life insurance, cars, and the Barth. I have never had the first problem. Also, each member has what is called a subscribers savings account, and I receive a check each year for 200/300 dollars. It's a dividend related to profits and all policy holders share in it. They recently settled a claim on one of our cars and we received far more than the car was worth. They also settled a claim on the awning of our Barth without even looking at it.

I am cautious to trust any insurance co. at this point. The company that dropped me also settled without hassle - until my policy next came due. Technically, I was not 'canceled', I was 'not renewed' at the nexr renewal.

I Also have had USAA for many years, covered everything I own until we down-sized into a manufactured home, which they don't cover. But I still buy that coverage through their general agency. Their unequaled reputation for service has kept me from even checking into prices of other companies. I get towing & labor for $8.00 per year, per vehicle covered, as opposed to $79.95 for Good Sam. Used it once, & it was satisfactory. The disadvantage is you must be military active duty, reserve or retired. At one time you had to be a commissioned officer on active duty, but that has changed over the years. I know they now cover certain Petty Officers, & NCOs, as well, but I don't know the details. They may have expanded their membership even further. [This message has been edited by olroy (edited September 12, 2005).]

USAA is still for military people and their families. My father-in-law, who served two different terms in the Air Force, got it some years after he was discharged. I've got to tell you how I got it. I was standing in line in a building at Fort Benning, Georgia, in October 1960, with about 200 other guys, all of us holding our clothes and some blankets and stuff, completely in the buff, waiting to get stuck with a needle for something or the other. There was a lady, yes a lady, sitting at a table asking if we wanted to sign up for insurance. I took a quick look at the papers while standing there with my buddies in the "all together" and signed on the dotted line. Been with them ever since and count it as one of the few smart things I've ever done in my life, although I do wear clothes now. Jim ------------------

I don't know why USAA slipped my mind (I've been a member since 1963). I can say (I've many friends in the USAA claims office in Tampa) that they had some serious issues with claims in the mid- to late-'90s. Hopefully that's been cured. I keep my policies with Auto-Owners because, commissions notwithstanding, their prices have clobbered USAA. That said, rates are based on local geographical territories, so get a number of quotes. My little Class C costs about $280/year with Auto-Owners' ultra-preferred company - with ample liability and uninsured motorist limits and collision and comprehensive as well. Auto-Owners consistently ranks right up there with USAA in consumers' ratings, and having represented them for over 25 years, I'd say the ranking is well-earned. Progressive and GMAC (which bought out Integon and Burlington) are certainly in the same league.
