This is a bit late but we have begun a national e-mail effort to get Veterans noticed on Monday. Each veteran is to choose an award ribbon (National Defense or other), not the medals, and wear it on your lapel, shirt collar of above your pocket that one day. We hope America will see who served and remember freedom ain't free!

The only hitch I see is that there are a lot of vets who were not awarded any award ribbons at all. For example, those who served between the Korea and Vietnam eras, or between Vietnam and the Gulf War, etc, are not eligible for the National Defense award. Additionally, those who were discharged 1961-1966 or so were not awarded the ND ribbon, but were retroactivelly authorized it i 66 or 67, but may not be aware of it or gone through whatever to get it. Most vets periods of service are perhaps accidents of birth, and their service is honorable, but many cannot wear any ribbon, and might feel left out.

I have a medal or two, but I'd have to say (which I did to my troops and troopettes) some are rewards for my crews' abilities, not mine (although I did keep the staff pukes off their backs so's they could work the mission).

Since I'm out-of-town at a star party, and generally don't even know for sure where my accoutrements are, I have to pass.

In either case the idea is quite staggering.
