I have replaced fuel pumps three times in the last 1000 miles in my 85 Regal with 454 Chevy. Any one else with problems? | |||

I failed to mention that is has an electric fuel pump by gas tank and has a new filter before the pump. | ||||

I hate to sound flippant, but, no, I haven't had any problems with the engine mounted fuel pump, because I don't have one. The original Carter electric pump that Barth installed in back does the job. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered | |||

I went up to a local mechanic and he said someone had put a pump on it to pull from a short distance and push for a shorter distance like a car. So pushing the fuel for 20' will probably wear the unit out quickly and suggested a carter designed for a motorhome. So sounds like a Carter is what I need. | ||||

On our 85 Regal, 28'er, we have an engine mounted non electric fuel pump. There are two gas tanks, one in the rear and one on the passenger side. We have never had any problems with fuel delivery except for a clogged fuel filter in the carburetor. We did replace the fuel pump once at 75000 miles.

Jerry, I had fuel delivery problems too. If your rig is like mine, you have a conventional mechanical pump on the side of the 454, and you have an electric pump in the tank. Somewhere in Barthmobile I put the pictures of the new pump and the Spectra FG12X sender unit, so my gas gauge would work too. The FG12X holds the electric fuel pump. There is a short rubber hose between them. The clamps are not designed to last 25 years. In my case, when I got under a half tank of fuel, the engine would run lean, or if I went up hills, there would be problems when I got near a half tank. Basically, with a low fuel level, the air gap in the short hose was being exposed, and the mechanical pump up front was drawing fumes. There are also rubber fuel lines at the top of the tank to attach to the steel lines running up front. On mine, those were inflexible and cracking. Your problem might just be hose clamps and rubber fuel lines. But getting access to them is a pain, because they are in, or have accessed blocked, by a gas tank.
