Hi everyone, we are looking into buying a 1979 mc24 fp3, 454. its via an auction in the UK so not much information, and yes it does need some work. However when looking at some of the splendid examples on this site i note when looking at the vin plate, it often does not show a GCWR figure, we call it gross train weight, the maximum laden weight of vehicle and the max laden trailer weight, My question does this mean they are not suitable for towing a trailer, we would really like to pull a trailer carrying our classic car to shows etc so not that often, the trailer and car would be maybe total 2700kgs. thank you.

Welcome to the site! We have information in our site archives you may find useful. Search the archives, don't hesitate to ask questions, we have several "experts" around. The 79-86 GM service manual is located here: http://barthmobile.com/groupee...ide_PG_1979-1986.pdf In a later edition GM included a towing weight chart that should apply. Attached, from the 1997 GM service guide... (Being the dimensionally challenged country we are, you will have to convert pounds (not money!) to kilograms....) ![]() Let us know how your purchase goes, we love to see projects! ![]()

Steve, is there a good way to determine the axle ratio on my coach?

If you are lucky, there will be a tag on the differential with number, load and axle ratio. If not, you will have to jack up the rear axle, mark the driveshaft and count the turns for each axle revolution. (Be sure to jack up both wheels or the free wheel will turn twice as much.) ![]() 9708-M0037-37MM-01 "98" Monarch 37 Spartan MM, 6 spd Allison Cummins 8.3 325+ hp

Thanks for the insight. I have read somewhere on this forum that the shorter Class A coaches were usually 4.10 ratio (mine is a 24 footer) and I wonder if there is any merit to that. I average about 8.5-9.0 mpg. I think with the help of my brother I can crawl in 1st at low speed and get a count on the ratio. Would love to have some extra peace of mind as I just got everything set up for flat towing my ~2,700 pound Toyota Pickup (1993). My total GVW is just about ~12,000 pounds with full tanks. I wouldn't say I'm worried about flat towing with this setup but it sure would be nice to confirm the axle ratio.

You are probably right on the 4.10 ratio. Your mileage points to the 4.10 ratio too. There should be no problem towing with that. Good luck. ![]() 9708-M0037-37MM-01 "98" Monarch 37 Spartan MM, 6 spd Allison Cummins 8.3 325+ hp
