There are ways to do it.

Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not.
In either case the idea is quite staggering.

I love this guy, but it would make more sense in a motorhome! (Maybe a knotty pine hunting lodge theme, small barrel stove straddling the doghouse..?)

I lit my woodstove here Dec 1 and it has burned continuously since. (The ashes drop into a removable bottom pan) I have used only 25-30 gal of propane each month. About 7 cords wood so far. Even if I buy the wood I spend half as much as I would with propane.

(If we could only get Barth to RUN on wood... hmm, maybe a STEAM engine? Once again pushing the Barth "custom" envelope!)

"and got an operating permit from the Swiss technical inspection authority."

Apparently it wasn't a smog inspection. Big Grin

In much of America, that type of wood stove wouldn't be allowed even in a new house.

Yeah, that would be quite a step back for emissions.

I forgot to mention, yes my woodstove has a catalytic convertor! (Of course the steam Barth would too.)

I am thinking more along the line of a trailer with steam turbine generator to power the electric motor mounted inline with the driveshaft. Hybrid M.H.

how he passed Swiss emissions is a mystery to me. Been there, lived it. They stop you on the autobahn and measure your emissions right there, your home oil burning furnace get inspected yearly. I had to remove a Las Vegas sticker from my car because it was too "distracting" according the authorities. But on the bright side we own exactly the same car, even the same color. But so far the heater works fine...

Have seen a number of these types of "modifications" on trailers, motor homes and even campers on the British Columbia (BC)coast, BC interior and yes, even here in Yukon, oops forgot, Alaska ,definitely, as well, but not likely all (any?) with catalytic converters.

Back in the late 60's, we traveled Mexico for 6 months. Met a couple in Guadalajara, who built a rustic cabin c/w over cab, on top of a flat bed truck.( can't remember make or model, but must have been late 50's or early 60's) When they showed us the interior we were awestruck when we spied the old steel woodstove( must have been 3-4 hundred lbs.)Of course, in that era everything was a little different...as was the built-in library of books in every nook and cranny,a slide projector and screen to show their nomadic and free lifestyle in nature. Somehow they traveled the USA and Mexico and the truck seemed to handle the payload! Amazing what you meet up with on the road!

We stick to our woodfired hottub and woodstove (without converters). But for vehicles I praise the dinosaur powered diesel Espar heater.

It might not fit in a car but their site claims:

This stainless steel stove is not only sexy, it's the last heat source you need to purchase for your Boat/ Recreational Vehicle / Tiny House / Cabin / Camper. It's so efficient that it can keep you warm for a week on a box of presto style logs, cook your breakfast and survive being flooded.
