I have finally gotten around to collecting some of the videos that were taken at the Texas Mile. This is one of the events where I do the timing and scoring. It is a big job as we have 250 participants and all sorts of vehicles.

The Texas Mile is what it says, a 1 mile long standing start race, one car at a time. No ET is measured only the speed at the 1/2 mile point and the 1 mile point.

I designed and fabricated all of the timing gear and large speed displays that is used. I use lasers in a measured trap 132 foot long and then those signals go to a trap computer which then goes to a laptop. I have 3 systems on each trap for redundancy. The 3 very large LED displays situated around the Beeville TX airport (where the event is held) so that drivers and spectators can view the speed as each car goes through the traps.

In the first video, there are quick shots of the lasers, the timing trailer with my computers and then of the Barth where I print out the speed tickets that I give to each driver for each pass they make. On a good day, we will average 450 runs/day. We have done over 500 runs in one day but that is a rough day for all of us.

These videos were taken by the BBC last March during their visit with us.

The Texas Mile

Worlds fatest Camaro

Ford GT 257.7 MPH

And of course we do have some excitement some times.

Nissan 233MPH sideways

And for Danny, our fastest bike (278 MPH) at the Texas Mile. Bill ran 311 MPH in 1 1/2 miles at Loring Maine last year. Bill had a bad crash at the Texas Mile last year but should make a full recovery. Bikes at those speeds on pavement scare the %*^&^ out of me!

Bill Warner 278 MPH at Texas Mile

I just got thru doing 2 events at Mojave CA, 1 in late April,a Ford GT event, and 1 in early May. Sadly we had a bad crash and a fatality at the Ford GT event. Obviously this sport is not with out danger but this is the first fatality at an event I have timed. I have timed over 30,000 vehicles at these events in the past 8 years.

Enjoy.

ED: A fantastic job. I enjoy watching this type of racing but for me personally the speeds are too fast for this ol'man............Carl

You are right Carl, too fast to me also but doing what I do keeps me close to the speed that I once got a thrill out of.

June 2-3 is my next event The Mojave Magnum and it will be 1.5 mile standing start run. I am worried at each mile event, but very concerned about 1.5 mile runs and at Mojave the winds can be crazy. Not good for bikes!
