I remember some years ago a RV set the Flying J gas station in Whyteville VA on I81 on fire. He did not switch off the pilot light while fueling.

was probably trying to light a propane-fueled appliance (likely furnace in DEC) rather than trying to light his tank.
I was in a campground at Saugatuck, MI decades ago when I heard a pop and the guy from the next trailer came out the door with burns on his hands and face. He was very fortunate that was about all.
In the basement of the house I had in Coloma, MI, I was trying to relight the propane-fired boiler after I had run out before I got refilled. So, there was air in the lines.
I crouched, in my robe and slippers, and kept pressing the red thermocouple override button while attempting to relight the pilot. It relit alright, along with the carpet of LPG that had accumulated all across the floor of the utility room. All that burned, other than the fumes, was the hair on my legs... well kinda first degree burns on my legs themselves too.
Such things are not ACCIDENTs, but as Dr. Laura used to say, STUPIDENTs.

Reminds me of high school when we threw a golf ball sized chunk of sodium metal down a storm sewer... exceptional full body fireball and much burned hair!

Well, I learned that hydrogen is lighter than air... it floated up and filled the vertical pipe until it ignited. Of course, the delay was just long enough for me to look over the edge...

Of course my friend standing beside me in the fireball could only say, "Do it again!" Ah yea, young and dumb...

Just a thought. Some recommend running the frig on propane while driving down the road. I suppose this is ok as long as the frig has some kind of a system that shuts off the propane if the flame goes out. Even so, it would be a smart thing (like in 'you better darn well') to shut everything off when you stop to fill up with gas. As for Tere and I, we turn to propane off at the tank before we go anywhere.
