Most people don't know that back in 1912 Hellmans' mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City, on May 4th. Mexicans were crazy about the stuff. On May 4th, the Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were eagerly waiting at the port of Vera Cruz for the arrival of the Titanic with its precious cargo. In those early days, news did not travel well, and the ship’s sinking was not widely known in Vera Cruz. When the crowd was informed of the sad news, they were incredibly disappointed at the sinking. There was much wailing, rending of garments, even a few leapers into the water. So great was the grief, that a national day of mourning was declared, which is still observed every May 4th. It is known, of course, as ...Sinko de Mayo. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered | ||
