Interesting to read all of this. I have yet to really get into our new Breakaway, but in driving it home from Miss, I too experienced the apparently common wandering issue. My 93 has a wheelbase of about 171" (a lot longer than Rusty's; interesting that he doesn't have this issue!), and of course there is the rear overhang with that fairly heavy Cummings. At least this gives me a few things to start looking into. Our tires are 19.5 Sumitomos that have probably less than 10k miles on them and are 3-4 years old. Don't really know what to expect as "normal", as I haven't driven a coach before. But of course I'd like to make it as good as it reasonably can be. Thanks. If you are going to take a fairly long trip and have the opportunity to vary the tire pressure use an IR temp gun across the treads of all tires after about 40 miles at speed. This profile will let you know how the tread is meeting the road and squirm will increase heat. | |||

We are taking a long trip in early August, so that sounds like a good idea. Of course, that would mean another coach related purchase...since I don't have an IR gun! The limiting factor would be the tires. Check the sidewall for max pressures (and load capacities at max will also be there). My coach has Steer-Safe; I don't know whether this affects the wandering problem. Fully-loaded for star parties, my coach weights 10,350 rear, 5,360 front, right at 34%. I did replace the kingpins last year with steel ones, but there was no notable difference in handling. What makes this handling anomaly more puzzling is that the '94+ Breakaway 28's (mine's the prototype) sit 10" higher than the earlier 28's and 30's. John, I have a Granning air ride suspension on the Rear only of my 30ft Breakaway. I Just replaced my rear shocks. In doing that I contacted Granning and spartan for p/n. Spartan said the coach was steel springs on both when built they couldn't help me. I found the Granning air ride was put on in California at a spring shop I have the recipt but can't remember the name. I have the reciept. I found the data tag on the L/h spring arm. I called the tech at granning and with the info I had, She was able to get the drawings from their engineering on my suspension w/ride height included. Hope this helps, Scotty | |||
