I think it worked just fine - idle hands are usually the Devil's Workshop - I'm glad to see you used your time very creatively! Now, you need to get a megaphone and a beret for your next production... If anyone wonders about the music the first obviously is Mel Torme, but many of you may have never heard of Karrin Allyson. I think one of the great jazz singers of our time...great quartet also. http://www.karrin.com/

Very nice. I am an old Mel Torme fan. I used to maintain his airplane, which is how I met him. He was a neat and classy guy, and even though I was just a peripheral acquaintance, he treated me like an old friend for decades. He had more style in his little finger than any other singer had in their whole bag. Somewhere, we have a video of a Christmas special, with Mel, Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Vic Damone, I think. Not sure on the last...........Anyway, Mel totally blew them out of the water. No contest! No second place. And he was totally effortless. No strain, no emoting, just smooth style and class. Side note: Tony Bennett is also a very nice person. He was on a plane I was finishing up and I engaged him in conversation about Rags to Riches and the drummer and trumpeter on the instrumental riff on that cut for quite a while. I really took a liking to him. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

Thanks Bill, one always wonders if the folks they admire are good people in real life. From a very young age I admired Mel Torme and have a huge collection of his recordings especially with George Shearing. Now there is a collaboration from heaven.

Yeah, here's another Mel Torme fan. I first heard/saw him in a long-forgotten movie in an open air GI theater in Japan, in 1947 or '48. Got a few records & a couple VCR's copied from TV, but nothing like a real collection. Among the ladies, my favorites are still Jo Stafford & Helen Forrest. And I miss Stan Kenton (you young folks probably don't know who these people are).

Hey Olroy, I saw Helen Forest on the TV just a couple nights ago. There was a special on the Ovation cable chanel about singers. Helen Forest got her big chance with Artie Shaw. But he hated singers because the thought his sidemen were much more talented. I am a little younger than you Olroy but one of my favorite singers next to Judy Garland was the great Keelly Smith. Sometime in the late 80's, I had a New Years Eve dinner and dancing date at the Avalon Casino at Catalina. The Gene Krupa (ghost)band was playing and Helen Forrest was singing. She sang all night, and still sounded great. We stayed on a friend's yacht and everything. It was such a big event, I went to Arthur Murray beforehand for some lessons. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

Hey Bill, I know this is thread drift on steroids but have you gone to Catalina lately. Deb and I spent a day out there a few years ago. What a magic place that is. I could spend a week or more out that at the drop of a hat. I have a friend who went out there a few years ago and physically ran into Johnny Carson...twice.

Yeah, Keely is another of the great ones, though I enjoyed her most in comic bits with her, then, hubby Louie Prima, one of pop music's original wild men. As an aside, in 1963, we lived in Rockville, MD, and my family did a one night stand as extras in the movie, "Lilith" with Warren Beatty & Jean Seberg. We all ended up on the cutting room floor except our daughter, who ran smack into Beatty as she left the theater where the scene was filmed. Keely had no part in the picture, but was present throughout the proceeding. She & Beatty had something going, as they greeted each other, shall we say, quite warmly between takes. Only time I ever saw her perform live, though it wasn't a formal performance, & she wasn't singing.
