He was clearly a bachelor, as he assembled and ran it in the kitchen. Smiler

A machinist would have to admire the spiraling of the lathe cuttings.

It is all the more remarkable, because he had to design and construct his own cam grinder first.

Hmm.. what a masterpiece! Not sure how it runs... hmm

It has 1:1 crank/cam gears so it is a 2 stroke? I couldn't quite make out details on the piston rings or the fuel system. Must be low compression (no center main bearing!) with really volatile fuel? There seems to be no visible exhaust but it might be methanol, etc.

Maybe it runs on compressed air (i.e. air motor?) not a diesel? Still an amazing machining project!

Steve,

I had wondered a few of those things too. I followed the link to youtube and found a translated description, copied below. You were right about the compressed air. I didn't think it would run on diesel, but it's probably based upon a marine diesel design. I once got to go below deck on a big ferry crossing the Adriatic Sea where the captain allowed me to photograph the engine. The crankshaft was exposed like this model engine.

Quote:

"V-12 engine with compressed air injection, hand made using traditional methods:12 cm3 of displacement, the diameter of the cylinder is 11,3 mm, the stroke of the pistons 10mm, it works with only 0,1kg/cm2. Is constructed with stainless steel, aluminum and bronze. Patelo dedicate this engine to his grandchildren: Sara,Carmen,Jose and Pablo. This engine is for education, exhibitons, etc., The reason to work with compressed air, to avoid contamination. He has made the plans and all parts, except the screws. The engine is not for sale. Thanks to everybody for the comments and sorry for my bad English."

Thanks for the follow through. I figured it must be air. Regardless, an amazing project!

It does look like the big slow "bunker C" diesel ship engines. Exposed valves, etc. Very cool little engine indeed. I would like to see how those tiny rocker arms and shafts were made, wow.
