Wow, what a revelation! I always associated that smell with too many Budweisers the night before.

When I got my first "and only" chemistry set I like to put sulfur in one of those little spoon and light it and run the other kids out of he garage. Do kids still get chemistry sets for Christmas? Yes, I know only kids from Taiwan and India...

I remember back to my childhood and the YMCA summer youth camp program. There was one water fountain that stunk of sulfur. The counselor that was running it had no problems with letting the little demons drink from it.

While growing up (OK I never really have grown up!) on a farm in southern Wisconsin, our well water had a high concentration of sulpher, not so bad as to stink but there none the less. I found it quite refreshing and when I left the area, I missed the taste! Our neighbors, however, had so much sulpher in there water it was bad smelling! They drank it anyway!

Vichy water as I recall has a high sulpher content, yeech. In the 1950s this was almost the only potable water in France and in fact much of Western Eruope, now this is not entirely bad as I grew to develop a taste for wine at an early age. Given the choice I'd still brush my teeth in beer rather than Vichy water.

Ready access to potable water and a fuel supply are fairly recent deals. I like most of us addressed the supply side of this question in our discussion thus far but the demand side should not be ignored.

As my bumper sticker says:

Neca eos omnes
Deus suos agnoset

As an adult I try to focus on working through problems and I do fear any person or group that says "one" anything; I suppose this is why we study the rise of Caesar but quick fixes are always tempting.

I see we have a student of Latin here. As a teenager this was (past tense) one of my favorite sayings.

"Kill'em all, and let God sort'em out" is adopted by the Marines and the Green Berets.

"Neca eos omnes. Deus suos agnoset", or "Kill them all. God will know His own."

Ok, now that we opened that can of worms... The title of this post "how low can it go" could take on a new meaning! Please step lightly. Smiler

Bill:

Yea I did and still do have some concern about my post. Your response is what I wanted to add but was unable to put into words, thanks.

I guess quick fixes have always been and it appears remain attractive, as I said I guess this is why a study of Caesar remains valid.

While Latin may be a dead language the questions discussed at the time (yea I know the quote is from a thousand years after Caesar) are anything but dead.

Bill like you I hope we continue, in this discussion at least, to take the high road.

I don't mind if my taxes subsidize ethanol. As world-wide competition drives up petroleum prices, the day may come when we thank those midwestern politicians for pursuing their parochial interests.
The comment of research is excellent. I think we have great potential in expanding resources or coming up with a whole new ball of wax. Let's try other things as this keeps our economy growing and helps keep our edge in the market place.

My problem with all of the above is the end result. We'll crack this nut one day, we must. But at the same time that we pour billions into an answer the benefits will be given, sold or reverse engineered out for pennies on the millions to other countries.

Look at the technology we have today: Flat Screen TV's were invented by NASA scientist and our tax dollars. How many of these TV or computer monitors are produced in the USA?

The Internet, the computers, the electronics, the technologies, the "Rubik's Cube" Big Grin! Anyway, you get my drift.

We have a hard enough time with the UN trying to get them to see that North Korea copying of our currency is bad. They want to know why we're making a stink about that.

Why do we come up with all of this and then just let it go? Mad

Bill NY, have you received any bulletins on the new low sulfur fuel? A freind of mine said that Cummins sent a bulletin saying that the older 5.9 motors needed additives added or they could expect injector pump failure.(pre 93 mtrs).
He has had two IH diesels blown in the last month due to injector problems. The shop recommned Lucas OIl treatment so he has mixed it in his supply tank now and hopes for the best. He runs around 12 Cummins and IH s in dump work.

No, I have not seen any specific bulletins.

Check out this posting from back in March of this year. The flags went up back then on this site. The new lower sulfur fuel should have additive added to pre 94 engines.

Check out this post from a few months ago. New Diesel
