Interesting Conversion
With the discussions here on converting the GM 6- and 8- liter throwaway engines to the Duramax, and with the heritage to FMC, I thought this item might be interesting:

FWIW, a friend who had an FMC, once asked the FMC guru in California about diesel conversions. He advised against it because of the added weight, and rear axle gearing tailored to the higher revs of automotive engines.

You can always change a rear axle ratio, but you can't lighten a diesel engine.

Price-wise, this seller is awfully proud of his rig, though FMCs seem to have assumed the status of cult classics. Too bad Barths aren't there yet.

He claims to have replaced the drivetrain complete.

There's a gaso 2900R (http://www.rvtrader.com/rvdetail78674.htm) a few miles from me - been about completely restored, although the repaint job is a little weak - new 440 - he wants $20K. I'd say the diesel is a bit overpriced, but considering what he's put into it, not exorbitantly so. For $40K+, I'd get a Barth or Vogue or Hawkins. Or three Georgie Boys....
