When I woke up that morning, I was in St. Simons Island, GA, getting ready to play golf with my son. We were sitting in the breakfast room of a hotel, eating, and then we saw what was on television. It was surreal. How could something like this happen in the United States. While the fires were burning I turned to my son and said, "Both buildings are going to collapse". I had spent my whole life in the steel business. I knew what would happen. We played 9 holes in a mental fog. I've always regretted that we didn't just get in the car and drive to New York.
I've visited ground zero a couple of times since. Our country is still at war. It just looks a little different now. Don't ever give up.
