A home for 86Barth

Steve VWA home for 86Barth
Another piece finally fell into place. I have been looking for a while for a place to store and work on 86Barth. I have 2 T hangars at the local airport but they are too low and too short to put the coach inside.
Got another bigger hangar with room for boat, plane and coach. Inside storage and a place to work on and paint the coach! I can put everything in this hangar, sell the 2 T hangars and about break even. Win-win!
Look forward to more projects and threads!

Steve VWMight be a while before there is space! I have not painted a vehicle in many years, have to find my spray guns, etc.
Let's see: 54 Chevy wagon, 64 VW bug, 71 Pinto, late 70's Mercury Zephyr, all over 30 years ago.
In 07 my airplane guy painted my 68 Cessna, materials alone were over $1500!
The new 2 part paints are really good but toxic to spray. (The hardener parts contain isocyanates.) I will probably use the older acrylic enamel like the original Barth paint. Unless I completely strip the old paint I can't use the newer 2 part polyurethane paints, the solvents will lift the old paint.
It will be interesting to see what options I have now.

DoormanYou don't have to look for that old paint gun, they don't use them any more. You are going to have to get you a new HVLP gun. One big advantage is much more paint goes on and less overspray.

Steve VWI could use the old gun for the older solvent based paint but you are right, the new ones use far less paint. My Dad has an HVLP setup that will be mine soon (he just doesn't know it yet)

Dad will be 85 in Dec, can't see him doing much painting any more. We (me, mostly) brushed/rolled the boat bottom paint last spring. He is finally getting smarter and lets me do it without his "help." He's not happy about that but he has accepted it now.
Need to get good ventilation and outside air source for my face mask. (Not like the old days… paint till you're too dizzy to go on, then get ready for the headache from hell. Good thing I quit a long time ago!) Nowdays THE PAINT WILL KILL YOU.
I've been wanting to paint the coach since I got it. Too busy working on the rolling gear and driveline, not to mention 43,000 miles of cruising.
By spring it will be warm enough and I'll have the shop ready. Dusty, you are welcome here, I can surely put you to work.

Jim and TereAfter hurricane Hugo put a tree limb on our very nice 240GL Volvo wagon, local guy who did absolutely high end body work, repainted the whole thing, base and clear. He sometimes didn't even use a mask and other times used just the old fashioned kind. He died at age 35 from breathing all that junk.

Steve VWSo young, so sad.
One of my father's friends was a body man for many years. Never wore a mask. Shortly after the new paints came out, he died from liver and kidney failure due to cyanate poisoning. THIS DANGER IS REAL.
Once the paint is cured it is very stable and durable, no more danger.

Marvin+DorisFor underbody paint I recommend "Chassis saver". Just follow instructions its not like regular paint. Dont shake it or turn upside down and do not apply to your skin .... Have fun!
If it says no chemical removes it - it means it. Also on your face etc
