Chevy Tracker
Thinking about replacing the '96 Cavalier with a 2002 Chevy Tracker. Guy at the campground we're at this weekend has one and it looks very nice. 4 wheel drive, manual 5-speed, 4 doors. Flat tows it everywhere. Anyone have experience with them? I don't like the tow dolly and want to stay under 3500#.

Hi Jim

We have a 1999 Tracker 4X4 two door
The Tracker is an easy tow vehicle and simple to set for towing-- put transfer case in neutral. transmission in second and unlock the steering (and leave the parking brake off!!)
we have the 1.6 litre engine--- is cheap with the gas. Goes to places in two wheel that would give our 4X4 suburban heartburn!

Good luck

Why do you leave the trans in second?

The owners manual specifies to leave trans in second-- I presume it is to reduce any tendency for the gears to spin--- it also gives you a signal if you missed neutral in the sub-trans.

I have a '95 Tracker 2 door soft top and a '01 Susuki Grand Vitari. BTW the tracker is a Suzuki Sidekick rebadged. The auto transmission I is put in park and the 5 speed I put in forth. Used to use 2nded until a friend forgot to put his transfer case in neutral and pulled it about 50 miles in 2nd.

Anyway nether transmission will oil the output shaft if the input shaft is not turning. This is the reason the 2 wheel drive in not authorized for towing.

The '95 Tracker has a fully mechanical odometer so miles accumultate when towing. I have a Remco speedometer disconnect installed witch is activated by 12vdc from the coach.

I'm actively looking for either a Tracker or a Suzuki Vatara, 4-door, 4-wheel drive, automatic transmission. Seems like it can serve as a drive around town and toad, equally well. Gary, I talked to a guy last week who has a 2002 Tracker and the odometer does not roll while you're towing. Can you explain this to me?

My Tracker is a '95. Somewhere around the late 90s early 2000s almost all cars no longer had direct connect speedometers. My Grand Vitara does not add miles being toad.

BTW come to Yuma and you will see hundreds of them. Still one of the most popular RV toads.
