Yes they do have the Ford Rouge Plant Tours on Sundays but the assembly line would not be running. For Info 800-835-5237
You may find one day would be enough on Mackinaw Island, unless you plan on doing all the touristy things like, all the little shops, may want to rent a bike for the 8 mile ride around the island. tour The Grand Hotel, horse drawn carriage rides through the middle part of the island of historic homes and sites.
Sounds like you have got alot on your plate to see in such a short time.
If your wife is a shopper Frankenmuth could be a 4-5 hour stop.
The scenic part of your trip down the west coast you could spend a week just doing that by the time stop in Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Traverse City, Empire(Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes), Grand Haven and Holland. Thats just a tip of the iceberg. Oh, stop in Shelby, I think they still have dune buggy rides or even rent a four wheeler to go out on the dunes there.

Good Luck and have a great time

Mike: No, I started to go to Mackinac Island
last summer, but got as far as a campground in
Traverse City. I developed av abcessed tooth
and had to return to Detroit and have it removed and spoiled everyone's vacation. The
reason I recommended Mill Creek Campground
over the KOA there is that it has 600 sites
to 112 sites for KOA. Also, TeePee campground
has only 100 sites. I was using a 28' Motor
Home. Best of luck on your proposed trip into
Michigan and enjoy it.

I ditto on the campground choice. Unless you are a sardine pass up http://www.campmackinaw.com/

I parked here at night in a rain storm. When we woke up the next morning I could not believe how cramped it was.

Dave and Jake, I am now confused, which is easily done. Dave says that Mill Creek has very small sites and you are packed in like sardines. Jake recommends it due to the number of sites. Help?

Some people like other people. Me I don't like people you know that Mike..

No really,

Gypsy Journal honcho Nick Russell www.gypsyjournal.net loves this place. He just likes being tight in. Obviously a lot of people like that because this 600 site campsite was packed when we were there. It's just not me...

Well, I had no idea that the west coast of Michigan was so popular at this time of year. I could not get an advance reservation in Holland. Ended up finding (begging) a place in Ludington. I guess most people take a whole week at a place along the west coast at this time of year.

Thanks again for everyone's help and input. I'll have to post a follow up in the travels section.

...And if ya do get to "The Soo", remember that you MUST eat at Antlers....I'm telling ya Mike, you'll miss alot of the north country ambiance if ya pass it up!

Also, you'll like the Ludington area as much as Holland.....Neat downtown, great beaches, the docks with the SS Badger (last cross-lake car ferry), etc.

And don't forget to take the Business Loop through downtown Petosky....The architecture of the homes is a sight.....

Lee,
How could I pass up a place called "Antlers"? It's on the list of things to do.

Well everyone else has just about covered it all. I've lived in Michigan all my life and I even learned some things. If you really plan on spending time in Holland I would suggest you consider Grand Have instead. Much nicer with lots more to do. And if you want to save some money on a night or 2 you are welcome to use my private hookup at our resort which is right on Lake Michigan and just North of Grand Haven/Holland. You can check it our at www.westmichiganvacations.com now we only have 1 hookup so if anyone else wants to take advantage of this offer let me know I just can only accommodate 1 at a time. I'm just sold this years coach (we use one during the summer so I can rent all of our cottages) but the spot is yearning for a Barth.

Doug, can you recommend an Italian restaurant in or near Wyoming? My father in law is not happy with the Eggplant Parmigiana at Aurora Pond, so we want to treat him when we visit. Carrabba's is close....is it OK?

Doug,
This place looks awesome! You have made a very generous offer. At this time it does not look like we will take you up on it. However, I will take your information along with me, just in case. We may just change our minds.

Well, we’d like to give a big thanks to all of the folks that helped with suggestions for our first Michigan tour. The Michigan tour was a success! However, we did loose a Chevy bow tie hub cap on the way home (any idea where I can get another one?). We made it to the Henry Ford Museum. Two days were not enough for us!! It was awesome. We stayed at the KOA in Ypsilanti. It was OK for its intended purpose.

Next was Frankenmuth, which we “saw” during a short 4 hour tour including lunch. Now, that’s a Christmas shop! From there we went to Mackinaw City. We stayed at the KOA, Mackinaw City. It was a nice campground. The spaces were about 10 feet wider than Mill Creek. Most importantly, there are only 100 or so campsites. That’s a lot less than the 600 at Mill. You can trade water view for space and quiet. It was quiet every night by 10! Also, this campground is less than a quarter mile from the bike trail into town. We do a lot of biking when we camp. Took the bikes to Mackinac Island and rode all over it.

Due to heavy rains and wind, we did not go to the SOO (no “Antlers”, we’ll have to try next time) and the UP. Also, we had to miss out on the Big Bear Sand Dunes due to weather.

Finally, we ended up spending two wonderful days in Ludington at Vacation station. This was a new experience for us since the RV place had a hot tube, complete with adult only hours. This place was spotless. The only down side was that many sites had very little shade. But again, Dave, there was a reasonable amount of space between units.

Well, thanks again. We liked it enough to keep it on the short list of places to visit.
