Pretty stressful around here this weekend. The unobtainable windshields in my coach were at the point of falling out due to 48 year old gaskets. There were places that the gasket was completely missing and mostly rotten. I decided that they were gonna break on their own if I didn't do something so I'd better just face the possibility of breaking them installing new gaskets. I checked with our local glass guy and he assured me he could cut flat windshield glass so there was at least the option of going back with a 4 piece windshield. I ordered the gasket extrusion from McMaster Carr. 25 feet of the 1/8" x 1/4" for the perimeter and 10 feet (MIN) of the 1/4" x 1/4" for the center strip. $60 plus freight. Windshields came out easily by cutting what was left of the gasket. No rot or corrosion on the frame. The passengers side went back in fairly easy and fit well. The drivers side though, looks to be a replacement and had evidence that it had been resized at some point. Probably cut down from a larger windshield. It took 2 attempts to get it even close to the correct position. The gaskets are about 1/4" narrower that the original so you have to fiddle with getting everything lined up and sealed. I'm going to wait a few days and let everything settle in. Hopefully we'll get some sunshine and then seal the joints and suspect edges. | |||
