I hate to sound like an old fuddy duddy worry-wort, but piles of organic substances like that can be subject to spontanious combustion in enclosed conditions. Rusty might be able to back me up or refute this one.

It would have to be wet, so the heat from decomposition would come into play.

No doubt dustyj is familiar with the heat from inground silos.

Yes I will have this out tomorrow. I'm just shocked at how big the pile is.

We had another vent that let snow in the attic a couple of years ago during a snow storm. I'm amazed.

I got 3 trash bags full of wheat straw out of the attic. It all sucked through the vent. Its like someone stuck a bale of hay up there.

My wifes folks said they hear noises in the upstairs walls. I checked all the roof vents, soffits, overhangs , no holes? Looked at the small shed roof 4x4 over the front door, with a plywood ceiling. Small hole in one corner. Seemed best to just remove ceiling and replace it and check if other holes into walls. Carefully pulled down one corner and a few acorns fell out. Grabed hold and pulled hard. Hole 4x4 came loose as well as mound of acorns, down the neck of my shirt in the hair. When I was finshed picking up acorns , I had a large trash can full of them. There are 10 of these vents across the roof. They are facing north, they have the storm collar on them and a screen inside. The one that had the pile of straw had the screen hanging there like the straw forced it out. Perhaps big bird has decided hmm to settle down.

I got two large trash bags out of my Mom's attic. The screen in the peak was out and sparrow's had been bringing grass clippings in trying to nest in the louvers. The nest would blow out prior to being completed and they would start over.
