Being new to the Barth genre, I was wondering where the name "Breakaway" came from and how you distinguish one from a Regal. The ones I've looked at seem to be not as tall. Are there also mechanical differences? Thanks for the info.

The term Breakaway, (I am assuming) just had to do with Breaking away and getting one the road. The Breakaway is a diesel coach on an Spartan EC-2000 chassis in a 30 and 33 foot lengths primarily with some 28's. The primary engine was a Cummins 5.9l 190 HP with a 4 speed Allison. After 1992 came a 7.3L 230HP in a 33 foot with a 6 speed Allison.

There Regals were all gas coaches primarly Chevy chassis, but some are John Deere, or Oshkosh with Ford 460 engines.

I can't find the specs on Regal and Breakaway height however, they should be very similar since both were on spring chassis and neither one was considered a basement model.

The first Breakaway owners insisted the name referred to the front shocks, which occasionally broke off the lower mount. This was the subject of much discussion at a Barth Rangers rally in Nashville in 19??

Gunner, I've never heard this one and respectfully question the wisdom of putting forth such a wierd answer. I'll just post this for now and let those with more knowledge take this up.

I was at the Rally (as was Mike Umbaugh, if memory serves); I don't remember the year. Why not wise, and why "a weird answer"? Literary license covers "first Breakaway owners" - obviously not all were present. Even so, "respectfully" doesn't cover your calling me a liar, and I resent it.

Come on guys, if there are two Barthmobilers who are going to fight on this website, I don't want to it to be a couple of my favorites.

I wouldn't doubt the shock think in jest. When people started changing from useless, mushy, shocks to Bilsteins and coil overs and other "new creations" I would not have been surprized to see broken mounts here and there. After all there is a special welding modification for P-30s which convert to Bilsteins.

Fact is though, there are zillions of those SC-2000 Spartan chassis out there and on almost every make of coach.

The Regal and the Breakaway were the two most popular models by far. They couldn't make them fast enough. And, by the way, I like Breakaway much better than the Gadabout, what was GMC thinking of anyway.

Sorry Gunner, I didn't mean to imply or call you a liar. I took your response to be a serious answer to a serious question and saw it as irresponsible in that context. I'll lighten up a bit from now on. When I first got the Euro I had to put up with a ration from the GOB's about my glasnost. Perhaps Dave can rerun that great piece and we can all have a laugh and get on with enjoying being Barth owners. Again, sorry about the mixup and hope to be able to tell you so in person sometime soon. Danny Z
