Leaving this morning for the Man Cup World championship weekend. First camping trip with the new Barth and I'm feeling a lot more comfortable about it than I would have with the Euro. My buddies are already there for test and tune and they say the place is jammed with racers. Should be at least 5 four cyl Top fuelers, and a lot of V Twin Top Fuelers, so we're expecting a lot of 6 second passes. If you're into that sort of thing it will be live streamed. Back home safe and sound. The new coach ran pretty bad but nothing that can't be fixed. It was really too long of a trip for a shakedown, and Richard told me about the carb so I can't blame him at all. The coach was a dream to drive and a dream to camp in at the track, the genny started a little rough but after a few minutes smoothed right out, and every system worked perfectly. Now to get the engine running nice and smooth for Hillsborough! As for the racing, we saw 2 world records in one run. Larry "Spider-Man" Mc Bride ran a 4.61 at 268 MPH, both records for motorcycles. OMG... 1/4 mile, 0-268 mph, 4.61 sec. Holy crap.. thinking about G forces... must be like the space shuttle launches. Let's see...my physics teacher told me distance equals one half the acceleration, times the square of the time... so acceleration equals 2 times the distance divided by time squared? 1/4 mile is 5280 ft/4 = 1320 ft. = distance (x 2 = 2640 ft) time squared is 4.61 x 4.61 = 21.25 sec.sec so: a = 2640 ft/21.25 sec.sec = 124.2 ft/sec/sec (1 G = 32 ft/sec/sec) so: 124.2 / 32 = 3.88 G Whoa... Keep in mind, this is the AVERAGE G FORCE!!! We all know the bikes come on stronger early and are leveling out at the end, so the maximum G force early in the race is m more! Ummm, Steve is your cell phone calculator or memory bank acting up. 1/4 mile is 1320ft X2 =2640. G force is about 5.401. I don't do ET at my events only speed at the 1/4, 1/2 and end of the mile run. Never saw anyone loose it at start but on shut down 1/2-3/4 mile there have been a few down. I have also seen a guy get blown off the bike when he straightened up after the finish. He didn't realize the wind drag his body presents at 250 MPH. Cross wind is a big factor at my events, wind can vary a lot in a mile run. Texas Mile results are on their website now Here: Texas Mile Oct results For some reason the fastest bike didn't get posted, he did 255.6 MPH in the mile. I redid the calcs now I'm getting 3.88 Gs Dam phone calculator keypad anyway. (I'm no good at texting either) With split distances and velocity we could approximate averages for other sections. I suspect the maximum Gs begin as the tire hooks up for full traction. From there on out it is torque vs rpm through the rest of the power band, probably keep increasing with today's boosted engines. For sure, this is by no means simple business. Even with today's fancy computers they spend a fortune to get it right. So many variables it boggles the mind, machine, tires, track conditions, temp, humidity, human factors.
