I can not lie, we flew up with friends and rented a 31 ft Sunseeker with 2 slides. It's a bear having to have a job get in the way of fun. Next time it with be for much longer and in the BARTH. 86 Barth (a Regal!) has over 7,500 miles this year. One trip to Denver was over 3,000 miles in 8 days. I flew from Mi to Alaska in a small plane in 2002. I would probably do that again, only took about 25 hrs airtime. Remarkable scenery. A Barth trip to Alaska would be awesome... take 3 weeks at least, though. 3700 miles...about $2,000 for gas and a couple quarts of oil each way... One of our great trips back in '07. In fact this is the reason for buying the Barth. Took a 5 weeks to get from Yuma to Vancover Island. We went up by ferry and returned by road. We were gone for 30 days, all driving. 8050 miles $4000 for fuel, 1 quart of oil, rear brake pads! (frozen caliper), seized transfer case on the Amigo @6000 miles. Took in the major places with a few off road excursions. Road from Destruction Bay to Beaver Creek, (border of Alaska and Canada) was exactly that, tried to destroy the Barth, Frost dips and swells of over 5 feet. Very slow going. Denali park was good, took a LONG bus ride all the way to Wonder Lake. People with us had made this trip the week before and it was so HOT, they said mosquitoes were so bad then that they could not get out of the bus. Even the caribou were in the road out of the dark areas trying to shake off the mosquitoes. Wasn't that bad for us but was not good either. Very enjoyable boat ride to the Columbia Glacier from Valdez, got with in a 1/4 mile from the face, glacier is one of the most active calving glaciers. Amazing to watch those huge chunks of ice falling into the water. Tour operator is an independent operator and gave a spectacular tour with no time table to return. About 8 hours. We tried to avoid buying fuel in Canada, was a good buck higher. Alaska was cheaper than I pay in CA. Probably $700-$800 more in fuel than a comparable trip in the lower 48. Surprisingly the MPG was no lower towing as no towing, sure I was driving a it slower but even at higher speeds MPG was quite good. I'll bet there was a drafting factor involved. I got two tank fills that I averaged over 11 MPG! Canada uses the Imperial gallon which is 20% more than the US gallon. Not any more. Canada sell by the metric system, litres. Price per litre was CN$1.39 in most places to as high as CN$1.69 per litre. One place was CN$1.29 per litre. Without factoring in Exchange rates, using 3.785L/US gal the cost of fuel varied between CN$4.88/US gal (only one place that low) to CN$6.39/US gal. Most were at CN$5.26/US gal. I did all my calculations converting litres to US gallons and also their money is slightly different and that was factored is as well so I was comparing apples to apples. In most Canadian areas the fuel was well over $5.00/U.S. gallon and in one place it was over $6.00/U.S.gal.
