Actually it is probably an 8.2L 4 stroke V8. These engines were very sensitive to overheating. The later ones had larger head bolts and were less trouble but still needed very close attention.

The 2 stroke 71 series were very actually really durable but they have a reputation for leaking oil and using more fuel.

Before the Series 60 (and dismissing the wretched passenger car "diesels"), GM made 4 4-stroke engines: ToroFlow (Bought the company), 6.2L, 6.5L, and 8.2L. The 6.5L TD is still being made, AMG having bought the rights and reengineered it; it is now a robust and reliable engine (I have one).
