Just seen this on TV last night: a Knoxville couple posted their vacation on facebook, meanwhile the bad guys made themselves at home at their house. It is sad when you cannot share your trip info with your friends but you always have to be aware that the bad guys are reading it too. FWIW - A number of years ago at a campfire bull session at Coyote Howls campground in Why, AZ, a Texas couple described an experience they had. They left on an extended RV tour that covered several months. When they returned, they found their front door standing open, & the house stripped to the walls. Even the appliances & plumbing fixtures were gone. They weren't too happy with their neighbors, but it was apparent they hadn't taken what steps they could to notify local law enforcement, or other responsible parties of their plans. One has to wonder what kind of relationships they had with their neighbors, but it does suggest one take all precautions they can to secure their property before they leave for months at a time.

Similar story: My grandfather spent his lifes fortune furnishing a house as a wedding gift for my Grandma. All appliances, fixtures and furniture were delivered to the house and installed just before the honeymoon. 1 day after they left, the same trucks came back and removed all of the same furniture, appliances and fixtures. They told the neighbors that they were moving already
