Thinking about Windows 8? TPM 2.0 is reason enough not to... Even without that, stay away from W8. I had to buy a laptop in a hurry in a not-so big town, and could not find a decent one with W7. So I have W8. I HATE IT. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered | |||

Link is fixed...I don't use Skype, so I don't know the impact. However since it's the Windows .api (Application Programming Interface) it sounds like later Windows OSs will cease to work. If your computer has the Skype .api on it, I don't think MS will delete it on updates. A Cautionary Tale About a week ago, my main PC, a fairly robust tower, decided that it could only boot from a CD. Since it has a PCIe RAID controller, (I don't use the one on the mobo), it was suspect. If it failed, the data on the drives could be lost, as a replacement would be difficult, as the company was sold in distress a few years back. The controller manages 4 drives in RAID 5 (loss of up to 2 drives loses no data, but it has the advantage over RAID 1 in that storage is 2x a single drive instead of 1's 1x). (Actually, the controller has 2 four-drive ports, so I might have been able to switch to the other port - why, yes, I AM big on redundancy.) Since I built and repaired PCs for 20 years, I've learned that slot controller cards rarely fail (never had one in the dozens I've installed), so something was telling the BIOS a fib. Disconnected the Sony DVD drive, and the 'puter booted normally. Did I break out into a sweat when it appeared the drive controller was bad? Of course not! Because I periodically image (a refined backup routine) everything onto an external drive. The "Cautionary Tale"? No matter how refined the redundancy of HDDs, loss of the controller can complicate things; while a controller can be replaced, it may use a different routine than the dead one, and restoring from image may be the only reliable way to restore. And the backup external drive travels with me when I travel. Should the house and main PC be destroyed, no data is lost. New PC, restore from the image, and go on. IMPORTANT! READ THIS! Heartbleed Bug A MAJOR security bug affects websites using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) or OSSL (Open SSL) encryption. The Heartbleed Bug is a VERY SERIOUS vulnerability which can or has exposed personal info. I tested Barthmobile.com, and we're NOT vulnerable. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Craigslist, and YouTube also are not, but Yahoo is. A list of tested websites is here.
