The Sun has been unusually quiet in the past few months, but Sunspot AR2158 may have triggered a very strong coronal mass ejection (CME). Such a mass of charged particles is what causes aurorae, as well as disruptions in radio and satellite propogation and electrical grids. Thanks for posting, Rusty. Interesting stuff. Whenever I feel the sun on my skin, I am always amazed by how we enjoy, and need, the potentially destructive radiation of our sun. It is difficult for me to comprehend that it is one of soooo many, most of which are larger - MUCH larger. | |||

More here. Please note CNN is incorrect about the makeup of a CME - it's not radiation, it's particles...(WHAT? CNN WRONG???)
