Ok. Everything was fine. Then no pedal. So I went through things cleaned the fuel etc. Still no pedal. Checked the blower shaft all ok. reassembled worked great. Drove home put the jacks down the there was a thud noise and the engine started to labor a bit but not run poorly. Next time I started again no pedal and a hard start. Stumped three Diesel techs and myself. Is there a safety feature where if you put the jacks down it limits power?

No.. The turbo did not puke. It's clean bearings are fine and spools great. There is a plate that goes between the blower and the intake. There is a ground switch that makes it open is my understanding. Anyway. I am letting the Diesel guys work on it. It's something simple. Runs too good.

It's a 1991 Detroit 6v92 silver series. The computer is like an OBD1 or a SMEC. The only problem with this series is you need special diagnostic equipment unlike OBD2. It sends codes that give you a general direction then you test accordingly. We are honing in on the problem and suspect the cam sensor or speed sensor. Special equipment will be here Friday. I had to call in a specialist from Olympia with the right tools. I will keep you updated.

OBD1 = On Board Diagnostic generation 1
SMEC = Single Module Engine Control
OBD2 = On Board Diagnostic gen 2 which is compliant from 1996 and up. Mandated by the federal government. It let the codes be universal and not proprietary unless safety related. IE: Air Bags, ABS, Main computer etc which is now covered up to 100k and beyond by the factory. Which is why they have you bring it back is for proper diagnostic and recommendation of repair. If under warranty or a recall they will just fix it. If not you know for sure what the problem is.

Ok so here is the deal so far. I have a D deck 1 with a GM plug in. This is a type of SMEC module that is proprietary to Detroit. Eric's RV is Sequim WA was no help, Charged me a bunch of money lied about what they did etc. Called Bill from Pacific marine in Sequim. Again no help but no charge. Called Detroit factory they referred me to Pacific Coast Detroit in Kent. I called there they said they can't fix it? Lynwood Detroit Diesel took on the project. To be continued. Lots o dollars and a hearty tow. Still open ended. 2 months and 3 techs and counting. A bit frustrated right now for sure.

This Generation of DD was what the called a stand alone unit. Serviced by Tognum through DD. It's kinda complicated. It was meant for generators or custom projects like this. There is an ECM burner out there if that's the problem. But no one seems to have one. Communication with the ECM has proven difficult being D Deck 1.
The people at Tognum told me that I will have to upgrade to a D Deck 2 which involves replacing the ECM, cams and cam sensors and such. I am not buying it and neither is the tech now working on it. So hopefully in a few weeks I will bring good news.

At first, I thought "no pedal" was a simple mechanical hardware (i.e. linkage) problem.

How bizarre indeed. Leave it to GM to take the tried and true 71 series diesels, modify to 92 series and bugger them up with an orphan ECM system. I've never heard of that system. I wonder if Bill sees them on road trucks at all.

Good luck finding the "right guy" to fix it. Like trying to find a good carburetor guy these days. head bang

Well sometimes its right under your nose. In this case it was right under the D deck. tucked away. Throttle sweep good, tps good sweep, good fuel air but hey.. what's that? The 2 inch hose from the turbo boost sensor was deteriorated. It said boost but no vacuum. Hence no pedal.... A 2 dollar part took down the challenger and rendered this one motionless. Full blower and turbo here we come testing tomorrow.

Steve more often than not people play with the carb and it's something stupid like a vacuum leak, bad ground, Carbon tracing, bad springs in the distributor causing no timing advance etc.

Ok so here is the update. Hose fixed the spooling - no pedal issue in neutral. However when in drive again no pedal. We have traced it down to the fuel filter housing having a pin hole letting air in the system. Once replaced I will update again.

Well the Detroit Diesel place said I have a D Deck 2 so the first shop was wrong. It is totally readable with the right equipment that can only be found at a DD shop. So I will replace the fuel filter bowl and check for codes next week. We are getting closer to a solution and it's looking good. Tooling Along

Ok so here is the update. After getting the right scanner from DD we re-mapped the ECU. Changed the oil from Synthetic to Dello. Replaced fuel filter seal and that little hose. Things run great now.

As it turns out according to the DD computer this engine is the 365hp DD silver series with a DDeck2 and a GM1 plug in.

He said it runs like a scalded dog and will provide years of use. Can't wait to go pick it up.
