Hi Wally,

Seeing's how we are both on the Left Coast, many times during the winter months, chains are REQUIRED to cross the Cascades. I don't know if they have those same requirements on other mountain passes in the U.S., however it seems likely they might. hmm My strategy is to avoid any place that would require chains.

When we picked our Barth up a few years ago in Seattle there were stormes over the Cascades. I90 had chain requirements but HWY 2 didn't. We chose HWY 2, there was about 6 inches of snow on the road but we made it over without buying chains.

That is kind of surprising since Stevens pass is about 1000 ft. higher than Snoqualmie pass. Most western states require you to carry chains after Nov. 1st, which is why we go south before that. Don't have chains, don't want chains, don't want to be anywhere that i would need chains. Big Grin

I do carry chains. Mostly incase I get stuck in sand at the beach. I grew up with front wheel drive motorhomes (Travoy, GMC, Revcon) and got stuck a couple of times in the dry sand...probably overkill but I feel better knowing they are there.....
