I got a great deal on Billstein Shocks for my Breakaway. Anyone every put shocks on themselves? I have air tools and a 4 ton floor jack. Richard R.P.Muise 1994 Breakaway/Cummins 5.9/Allison transmission/Spartan Chassis | ||

I haven't on my Breakaway, but I've done many others. The trick is to elevate the chassis but no the axle. It's actually pretty easy. A 4T jack might be a little weak for the rear. Jackstands are a must. I didn't need to jack the coach up, it was a bit of a pain to compress the shocks to fit but was able with some creative ideas. After removal of the original shock, attache the top of the shock to the top coach mount. Do not tighten yet. then the idea is to compress the shock so that it will fit into the lower attachment. Once the shock is fitted into the attach points of the chassis, then tighten both top and bottom nuts and make sure the washers are mounted the correct way. It is also important to tighten when the coach is in the normal riding position so that there is no rotational strain place on the rubber mounts. I did use a spring compressor to tame the gas shocks I put on my van.
