I recently noticed that my 94 Breakaway was drifting to the right as I drove. Intially, I thought it was the steer safe. However, as I was driving with Bill G., he noticed that I was going sideways down the road. I made it to our campsite and Bill inspected my rear springs and axle. The four bolts on the left rear spring shackle had sheered- two breaking awhile ago and the remaining two breaking recently. The left side of the rear axle had moved over two inches back and was ready to rub against the rear inside wheel well. I was fortunate to find a mechanic who fixed the problem but i wanted to let the everyone know what happened. I don't know how common this is but if you have springs, you might want to check the shackles once in awhile. R.P.Muise 1994 Breakaway/Cummins 5.9/Allison transmission/Spartan Chassis | ||

To this I'd add check the rubber for signs of aging - the outer collar on mine have split. I got a new set (fronts plus the complete shackle assemblies); IIRC,the total tab from Spartan was a reasonable $265. Thanks for the info Richard and Rusty: Question? Who has a 30 ft Breakaway with air assist bags on the rear? Where are they located, ahead of the axle or behind the axle? Mine are located ahead of the axle and they will not stay in place, I have rebuilt the right side bracket ( cracked)and the way the system is mounted to the springs there is no way that they will stay in place. When they move back, contact is made with the brake line where it goes into the caliper.
