to beat the price of R-12 go to FREEZE12 it may be hard to find at auto parts stores but you can find it at freeze12.com it is only $83.95 a case of 12 cans with free shipping i tried to buy it at auto zone they said they don't carry it because it is to volatile but i did find it at carquest for $10.00 a can maybe when it first came out it was volatile but now the can says it is non-flammable / no cfc's and it is legal for anyone to buy i think you use about 10 % less. i have been told you can't change a dual ac system over to R-134a but freeze12 works great.

Three years ago I converted a R12 system in a van, to R134a, an exercise I don't recommend to anyone.
New compressor, new hoses, lots of work and $.

If this Freeze 12 lives up to its advance billing, it looks like a good solution for anyone with an R12 system in decent condition, who need a re-charge.

I checked their website, and they also have a kit with 3 cans of Freeze 12, a can of lubricant, and the necessary fittings, hoses, and pressure gauge to install. $53.95.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has installed it. My Barth system still works, but there's oily mud on top of the receiver/dryer. I won't mess with it as long as it works, but some day, it's going to quit.

i called freeze12 today they said it says free shipping over $150.00 is on the store front page, but if you just go to the web site and click on store you bypass the store front you have to click on the top left corner of web page where it says store front, so only if you need over $150.00 worth you would have to buy 2 cases so maybe you would be better off getting it at a local auto store. then they fed me this line that you need to know the federal law to do any a/c work i ask him why do they sell it to the general public he had no answer.
but any one can buy R-134a or the gages to install it so why do you need to know the federal law.

The bit about knowing Federal law vs. sales to the general public is one of two things, a) Product liability. If you say, oh yeah, I know all about the law, you can't successfully sue them for selling you something you were too ignorant, or stupid to handle safely.
b) They don't have their act together very well. This is what your experience suggests.
