I have a 87 John deere chassie, I'm in the process of installing a Ford 511 stroker motor witch has 87 fuel injection heads ported and machined for a carburetor manifold, my problem is these heads have square ports and the banks headers I have are oval ports. I need headers that will fit with no smog stuff any sujestions ??? Three Times A Charm 88 30' Regal John Deere Hot Rod Lincoln 511 Cubic Inches 8712-3499-30J-A

All right, a hot rod Ford! Sorry I can't help about the headers. We'll have to race 'em when I get my 454 HO motor in! 9708-M0037-37MM-01 "98" Monarch 37 Spartan MM, 6 spd Allison Cummins 8.3 325+ hp

Do the ports and bolt holes line up? Are the exhaust ports in the heads larger or smaller than the holes in the header flanges? If the head ports are smaller, they will work fine. If the head ports are a little larger, the Banks flanges might be thick enough to do a little grinding to match. Does Banks sell headers to fit your heads? If the head ports are substantially larger than the header flange holes, you might need a larger flange. Getting one in stainless to match you headers might be difficult. You could also buy a flange from a header part marketer to fit the head ports, and weld them up and then grind the holes to act as spacer/reducer/adapters, fitting the head ports on one side and the header flange on the other. Have you talked to Banks? Usually the first contact is a ding a ling salesman, so keep trying. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

I just orderd a set of Doug Thorley headers from amazon, Banks couldn't help me, I talked with a tech from dt and he gave me a part # thy-214y-fi-c. He said they should fit providing there were no chassie changes from 87 to 88. Steve I don't know about racing but I'll challenge you to a motor home pull This motor was built for towing by a company that specialized in the ford 385 series motor. They were known for making tractor pull motors, thir name was Torqueman from down south. Thanks for the input Bill, but the banks headers were larger then the ports, yea I could have welded on new flanges , but time is of the essence, once again I'm under the gun to get to the Indy 500 I have a ton of pictures but once again I have to relearn how to put them up. I like the tri wye design of the Thorleys more the equal length Banks.
I'm not a Ford guy, but I would advise a trans temp gauge. High torque motors really build up heat in the converter, and the gauge will tell you when you can stop adding coolers. I ended up with a total of 119,200 BTUs of cooling capacity for the trans. Including the engine oil cooler I ran out of real estate in front of the radiator. A big puller fan can help at lower speeds on hot, steep climbs when towing. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered

I'm not a ford guy either Bill, but I'm learning. This rig came with a monster combo trans/oil cooler, the trans section on top and the oil section on bottom it covers the full core , I flushed it out until I got clear sea foam out of it. I plan on installing two tyranny temp sending units with a switch on the gage to switch from in and out of the transmission. I had the tranny rebuilt By a friend who owned a tranny shop for 30 years, and had the torque converter rebuilt special for this application by protorque here on Long Island. I am eventually going to install a electric fan (after indy). I tried finding one to fit my Radiator ( that I had recored) to no avail, so I will have to fab one. I am presently using an X pipe and two Afterburner mufflers with side dumps. The mufflers were too "hot-roddy" with both true duals or an H pipe. The H pipe gave a smoother sound and more midrange, though. The X pipe has as good or better midrange and a little more top end power, and is a smoother sound. THIS article influenced me to try an X pipe. It was either that or two new mufflers. I don't think my results are as dramatic as the article test, though. . 84 30T PeeThirty-Something, 502 powered
