So my Barth (1975 20ft) has never had a awning on her but does have the awning rail installed from the factory.
Does anybody know if when installing an awning can I screw the top brackets in through the rail where the rivets are holding the rail. Should those rivets be into frame? Really hoping I hit frame when I drill the top brackets. As long as I do and all goes as planned I am going to drill and tap for 1/4-20 bolts on the top.

After reading I thought I would clarify a little. If you have a awning on your older barth do the screws on the top brackets go through the track/"C" channel of the awning rail? Or above the track on the same line the rivets are?

You still have me a little confused. Awnings I've installed have a fabric bead that slides down that C rail. The brackets mount on the bottom. When the awning is pulled out - it is attached at the C rail and pivots out off the bottom mounted rail. Does that help. This would be true for Zip Dee, Carefree, but there are some other newer brands that are self dumping that are mounted a lot differently.

Yes the awning fabric itself goes through the rail. I am talking the top mounting brackets. I don't have any way to kow exactly where the frame is. So I was just wondering where others with similiar coaches are mounted. The top bracket it self with two screws going into the side. Do the two screws go through the c channel and into the frame or just above the c channel.

Josh, it just occurred to me (after looking at a ZipDee drawing) that there is a top horizontal rail, but it is not mounted to the top deck, it is instead erected up to that point when the awning is deployed. You should look at some installed to see what I'm talking about.

I don't know if this will help. If you search on Barth's patient it has a good drawing on the construction of these coaches. The corners use a special extrusion.

Following the rivet line up will show you where the attachment should be.
