I now have an update on the gear vendors unit we had installed in our '85 28' Regal. Gear Vendors actually flew a technician from California to the Camping World store in Statesville, NC, since the Statesville store had never installed one. The fit was easy and now instead of a 3-piece driveshaft, we have a 2-piecer. The operation is quite simple. In the manual mode, you just step on a button that looks like a floor dimmer switch and the G/V comes on as overdrive in whatever gear you're in. In the automatic mode, it kicks into 3rd overdrive at about 45 mph all by itself. Our first trip was from Charlotte to Madisonville, Tennessee, and included two long pulls up the mountains going into Ashville. Total distance was about 300 miles and we averaged 10.4 mpg, an improvement from 9.1 before. I don't have a tach yet, but the noise level was very much improved and I would guess we were turning about 2300rpm at 60 mph. The tach gets installed this weekend and when we bring the Barth back to Charlotte, we'll update this post. It's pricey--3400--but well worth it if you want to have a nice quiet ride and treat the 454 like it wants to be treated.
