New Converter.....
I can relate to that - I was once Chief Engineer on a ship that was built (I'm convinced) by hanging the HVAC system over the ways, then building the ship around it...

Glad the converter "conversion" was easy and successful. As to the genset's stumbling, I don't think the bad battery is the cause. It does, however soound like the coil might be bad, as they'll give the same symptoms when dying.

Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we're not.
In either case the idea is quite staggering.

Another possibility for the gennies problem could be the safeties. I am not sure what all is wired in on this one but temp sensors on the head and exhaust are often present and are just snap disc switches. Another would be oil temp. Snap discs seem to fail after some long time period. The good news,in these applications,is they fail on the safe side, low temperature.
A friend ended up replacing all on his 1984 Onan unit and it was less than $50.
